Sahil Jadhav Clinches Historic Bronze for India at Archery World Cup 2026 in Shanghai

Sahil Jadhav won his maiden Archery World Cup medal by defeating Denmark's Martin Damsbo to claim bronze in the men's individual compound event at the 2026 Archery World Cup Stage 2 in Shanghai. His historic achievement was India's only medal in compound archery, while the nation continues to chase further success in recurve events.

ndia's Sahil Jadhav delivered a breakthrough performance at the Archery World Cup 2026 Stage 2 in Shanghai, People's Republic of China, securing a bronze medal in the men's individual compound event and earning the first Archery World Cup medal of his career.

The 25-year-old Indian archer defeated Denmark's experienced Martin Damsbo 147-144 in the bronze medal match on Saturday. Jadhav trailed 30-29 after the opening set but mounted a steady comeback over the next four sets to seal a memorable victory and ensure India's only medal in the compound events at this year's Shanghai World Cup.

Jadhav's path to the podium was marked by a series of impressive performances against some of the world's most accomplished compound archers. In the quarter-finals, the eighth-seeded Indian edged Austria's Nico Wiener, the 2021 world champion, in a dramatic shoot-off after both archers were locked at 147. In the semi-finals, Jadhav faced reigning world champion Nicolas Girard of France and fought hard before suffering a narrow 147-145 defeat, which sent him into the bronze medal playoff.

Earlier in the competition, Jadhav overcame Indian veteran Abhishek Verma in the third round and defeated Germany's Ruven Flüß 149-146 in the round of 16, underlining his consistency throughout the tournament.

Jadhav's bronze stood out as India's sole success in the compound discipline at the Shanghai leg of the Archery World Cup. The result marked a sharp contrast to last year, when India captured five medals in compound archery at the same venue.

India's other men's compound contenders were unable to progress to the podium. Kushal Dalal saw his campaign end in the quarter-finals, while former world champion Ojas Deotale was eliminated in the round of 16. The Indian men's compound team, which had won gold in Shanghai last year, also fell short this time after losing in the quarter-finals.

The women's compound events proved equally challenging for India. The Indian women's compound team was knocked out in the quarter-finals following a 233-227 defeat to Turkiye. Madhura Dhamangaonkar, the gold medallist in Shanghai last year, suffered a 148-144 loss to top seed Alexis Ruiz of the United States in the round of 32.

Former world champion Aditi Swami emerged as India's best performer in the women's individual compound competition, but her campaign ended in the quarter-finals after she lost to Estonia's Lisell Jaatma in a shoot-off. Jaatma had earlier edged India's top-ranked compound archer Jyothi Surekha Vennam 148-147 in the round of 16.

In the mixed compound team event, which is set to make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, Aditi Swami and Ojas Deotale were defeated in the quarter-finals by the American duo of Alexis Ruiz and James Lutz.

Despite a disappointing outcome in the compound events, India remains in contention for further success in the recurve category. Simranjeet Kaur has advanced to the women's individual semi-finals, while the Indian women's recurve team is scheduled to take on China in the gold medal match on Sunday.

Sahil Jadhav's landmark bronze medal not only marks a defining moment in his career but also offers India a vital boost at a tournament where several established stars fell short. His achievement in Shanghai highlights the emergence of a new force in Indian compound archery and keeps the nation's medal hopes alive as the competition enters its final day.
