India Among Top Global Performers on Climate Commitments, Says Piyush Goyal

Union Minister Piyush Goyal states India is among the top global performers in meeting climate commitments, highlighting early achievement of renewable energy targets and a bold 500 GW clean energy goal by 2030 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Wednesday asserted that India ranks among the best-performing countries globally in achieving its climate commitments under the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), underscoring the nation’s accelerating progress in clean energy and sustainability.

Addressing a high-level dialogue on “Viksit Bharat 2047 – Advancing Resilience with Climate Intelligence” in New Delhi, the minister stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, climate action in India has transitioned from being viewed as a compulsion to becoming an economically viable and strategic national priority. He emphasized that this shift has strengthened India’s global standing in climate leadership.

Goyal highlighted the Prime Minister’s pivotal role in mobilizing the Global South to address the climate crisis with urgency and a shared sense of responsibility. He noted that India has consistently ranked among the top nations within the G20 in meeting renewable energy targets, demonstrating sustained commitment to international climate goals.

The minister further revealed that India achieved its renewable energy targets eight years ahead of schedule, marking a significant milestone in its clean energy transition. He stated that the country currently has an installed renewable energy capacity of approximately 260 gigawatts and has set an ambitious target to scale this up to 500 gigawatts by 2030.
