Raghav Chadha’s Alleged Social Media Purge After Reported Shift to Bharatiya Janata Party Triggers Political Firestorm

Raghav Chadha’s reported exit from Aam Aadmi Party and alleged move to Bharatiya Janata Party has sparked controversy over resurfaced critical posts against PM Narendra Modi and BJP. Deleted social media content, viral clips, and a sharp fall in Instagram followers have intensified political debate and accusations of opportunism.

In a dramatic political development reported on Friday, April 24, Raghav Chadha’s alleged exit from the Aam Aadmi Party and his reported move to the Bharatiya Janata Party, alongside six other Rajya Sabha Members of Parliament, has triggered a wave of scrutiny over his past social media activity. The development has also reignited debate over political consistency and digital accountability.

Following the reported shift, several of Chadha’s past social media posts critical of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi resurfaced online, many of which were subsequently deleted. These posts quickly went viral, intensifying accusations of political opportunism and so-called “washing machine politics,” a term used by critics to describe the alleged rebranding of politicians after switching parties.

A widely circulated interview clip from 2023 shows Raghav Chadha stating, “I believe the Bharatiya Janata Party is a party of illiterate goons.” In the same remarks, he accused the party of engaging in what he described as “hooliganism,” alleging an overreliance on force over merit. The clip spread rapidly across social media platforms including X and Instagram, accumulating millions of views and sparking widespread debate.

Additional scrutiny emerged after Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj highlighted the deletion of Chadha’s earlier posts. Screenshots shared online reportedly showed posts in which Chadha had referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “dictatorial” and the Bharatiya Janata Party as “anti-poor.” According to Bharadwaj, searches related to “Modi” and “Bharatiya Janata Party” on Chadha’s profile now largely display supportive content, with only a limited number of pro-Modi posts remaining visible.

The removal of these posts has intensified political criticism, with online users and commentators amplifying memes and discussions centered on the perceived reversal in stance following the reported party shift.

Within 24 hours of the reported political transition, Chadha’s social media following also experienced a significant decline. His Instagram follower count reportedly fell from 14.6 million to 13.5 million, marking a dropof nearly one million followers in a single day. This decline has been widely circulated online and described by some commentators as a digital backlash.

The trend has been referred to as a Gen Z unfollow campaign, a term used by Nationalist Congress Party–Sharad Pawar faction spokesperson Anish Gawande, who attributed the decline to youth dissatisfaction with Chadha’s reported political realignment after years of strong criticism of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The unfolding controversy underscores the increasing impact of digital footprints on political narratives, where past statements continue to shape public perception long after political realignments occur.

The situation highlights how rapidly social media activity can influence political discourse, intensifying scrutiny of public figures and their evolving affiliations in an era of heightened online visibility.
