Olympic bronze medallist Gurbax Singh Grewal, who represented India at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics alongside his brother, has died at 84 following a heart attack in Zirakpur. A key figure in Indian hockey, he also contributed significantly as a sports administrator with Western Railways and the Mumbai Hockey Association.

Gurbax Singh Grewal, a distinguished Olympic hockey medallist who brought pride to India on the global stage, has died following a heart attack in Zirakpur, near Chandigarh. He was 84. Grewal passed away on Friday, marking the end of an era associated with one of India’s celebrated hockey generations.

Grewal was a key member of the Indian hockey team that secured a bronze medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. In a rare and memorable distinction, he represented the nation at the same Olympic Games alongside his brother, Balbir Singh Grewal. The presence of both siblings in the national side remains one of the few such instances in Olympic hockey history, underscoring a unique family contribution to Indian sport.

Beyond his achievements on the field, Grewal dedicated significant years to nurturing hockey talent in his administrative role. Serving as a senior sports officer with Western Railways, he played a crucial part in identifying and inducting promising players into the Railways hockey system. His efforts notably included bringing several talented athletes from Rajasthan into the structured framework of institutional hockey.

After retiring from service in Mumbai, Grewal continued his association with the sport through administrative responsibilities. He served as the honorary secretary of the Mumbai Hockey Association, contributing to the development and organization of hockey at the regional level.
