Bnei Menashe Begin Historic Return to Israel Under ‘Operation Wings of Dawn’

Around 250 members of India’s Bnei Menashe Jewish community have arrived in Israel under ‘Operation Wings of Dawn,’ with 1,200 more expected. The historic relocation highlights ancient lineage claims, religious identity, and Israel’s strategic integration efforts.

In a significant development rooted in history, faith, and geopolitics, around 250 members of the Bnei Menashe community from India’s northeastern states have arrived in Tel Aviv, marking the first phase of a larger relocation effort by Israel. The move is part of an ambitious government initiative, ‘Operation Wings of Dawn,’ announced in November 2025, with approximately 1,200 more members expected to follow by the end of the year.

The Bnei Menashe, a Jewish community residing primarily in Manipur and Mizoram, trace their ancestry to the ancient Menashe tribe, believed to be one of the ten tribes exiled nearly 2,800 years ago. According to historical accounts and community narratives, their ancestors migrated across regions including Persia, Afghanistan, Tibet, and China, preserving Jewish traditions throughout their journey. Despite conversions to Christianity by missionaries in India, many in the community have continued to practice Judaism and pass down its teachings to future generations.

Reports indicate that nearly 10,000 members of the Bnei Menashe community currently reside in India’s northeast, with approximately half having already immigrated to Israel since the 1990s. Around 6,000 individuals are still awaiting relocation. However, upon arrival in Israel, members are required to undergo formal religious conversion processes to qualify for citizenship.

The Israeli government has allocated an estimated million for the relocation effort. This funding covers transportation, religious conversion programs, housing arrangements, Hebrew language education, and additional integration benefits. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the initiative as a “significant and Zionist decision” that would contribute to strengthening the northern and Galilee regions of the country.

The operation is being carried out through a joint initiative led by the Aliyah and Integration Ministry and the Jewish Agency for Israel. Two additional flights carrying members of the community are scheduled in the coming weeks, as confirmed by officials from the Aliyah and Integration Ministry.

Upon their arrival in Tel Aviv, the new immigrants were greeted with ceremonial enthusiasm. Members of the community already residing in Israel welcomed them with cheers as they walked along a red carpet, dressed in traditional attire. Aliyah and Integration Minister Ofir Sofer described the moment as historic, stating that the initiative aims to bring the entire Bnei Menashe community to Israel. He emphasized the symbolic importance of their arrival, noting it coincided with the nation’s 78th Independence Day celebrations.

For many members of the community, the migration is driven by a desire to fully practice their religion. A community member from Manipur, Benjamin Haokip, stated that limitations in India prevent them from observing all customs, reinforcing their aspiration to settle in Israel.

The term ‘Aliyah’ refers to the immigration of Jewish individuals to Israel, while those undertaking this journey are known as ‘Olim.’ The ongoing relocation of the Bnei Menashe underscores a rare convergence of ancient lineage claims, modern state policy, and religious identity, making it a development of both cultural and political significance.
