Three-Decade Revenge Killing in Mumbai: Crime Branch Arrests Two for Murder of 78-Year-Old Alleged Informant
A 29-year-old man in Mumbai has been arrested for murdering a 78-year-old alleged informant in revenge for a 1999 police encounter. The case, linked to underworld connections and a decades-old vendetta, highlights the lasting impact of criminal rivalries.
According to officials, the primary accused, Shadiq Jawar, is the nephew of former gangster Shadiq Kalia, who was killed in a police encounter in 1999. Investigators allege that Jawar suspected the deceased, Iqbal Ibrahim Celia, of informing the police about his uncle’s whereabouts at the time.
Police claim that Celia had allegedly provided information to encounter specialist Daya Nayak, which led to Kalia’s death. Acting on this belief, Jawar is said to have meticulously planned the killing as an act of long-standing revenge.
The incident took place on the evening of April 20 at Celia’s residence in Nagpada, Mumbai. Authorities stated that the attackers entered the house when other family members were absent and fatally assaulted the elderly man with sharp-edged weapons, inflicting more than 20 injuries. Upon returning home, Celia’s wife and son discovered his body lying in a pool of blood.
Following the murder, the accused fled the scene. However, investigators relied on CCTV footage to trace their movements. The Mumbai Crime Branch revealed that the duo travelled through Antop Hill and Vidyavihar to Kalyan before escaping to Nagpur.
Based on technical surveillance and collected evidence, police teams tracked and arrested Jawar along with his 22-year-old accomplice, Naushad Mithani, from Nagpur. During interrogation, both accused allegedly confessed to their involvement in the crime.
Police records indicate that Shadiq Kalia was once a street vendor in Mumbai’s Kalachowki area before entering the underworld and becoming associated with the gang of Chhota Shakeel. He was killed in November 1999 during a police operation.
Officials further stated that Jawar was only two years old at the time of his uncle’s death but allegedly grew up harbouring a desire for revenge, which culminated in the brutal killing decades later. The investigation into the case remains ongoing.
This case underscores the enduring impact of past criminal networks and vendettas, revealing how unresolved grievances can resurface violently even after decades, posing continued challenges for law enforcement agencies.
