Indian Railways Plans Major Upgrade of Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi Trains Across 100 Services
Indian Railways announces a major upgrade plan for nearly 100 Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi trains, focusing on improved passenger amenities, modern interiors, better washrooms, enhanced seating, and upgraded safety systems to meet rising expectations in comfort, cleanliness, and service quality.
According to an official order dated April 23, the Railway Board has directed all railway zones to prepare detailed action plans aimed at improving aesthetics, service levels, and overall passenger comfort. The order emphasised that these premium trains must be maintained in optimal condition, with particular attention to elements that directly affect passengers.
The Railway Board has instructed general managers of all zones to conduct detailed inspections of train rakes and develop comprehensive plans for upgrades. The initiative will be implemented once these plans are finalised.
The upgrade exercise will focus extensively on passenger-facing facilities. Washrooms will undergo improvements, including enhancements to doors, locking mechanisms, washbasins, flushing systems, and drainage. Additional upgrades will include improvements in seat upholstery and associated amenities such as mobile charging ports, snack tables, footrests, armrests, roller blinds, and magazine pockets.
The interiors of coaches will also be modernised, with attention to panels, flooring, and areas near washrooms. Digital passenger information systems and closed-circuit television cameras will be upgraded to improve communication and security within the trains.
In addition to interior improvements, the Railway Board has directed enhancements to the exterior aesthetics of coaches, including window glass and destination display panels.
A second official stated that the primary objective of the initiative is to modernise these flagship trains and meet increasing passenger expectations regarding cleanliness, reliability, and contemporary amenities.
Earlier, in an order dated April 16, the Railway Board had advised all zonal railways to conduct detailed audits to identify deficiencies in Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi train rakes. The zones were instructed to prepare short-term action plans with defined timelines for rectification and continuous monitoring.
This large-scale upgrade reflects Indian Railways’ renewed focus on strengthening service quality and modern infrastructure in its premium train segment, signalling a commitment to delivering improved travel standards across key routes.
