Indian Railways Plans Major Capacity Boost Across Seven High-Density Routes

Indian Railways is preparing to expand capacity on seven High Density Network routes linking Delhi with Mumbai, Howrah, Chennai and Guwahati through track, signalling, yard and infrastructure upgrades.

Indian Railways is preparing to significantly increase capacity on seven of the country’s busiest and strategically important rail routes, connecting the national capital Delhi with major economic and passenger centres including Mumbai, Howrah, Chennai and Guwahati. The routes are Delhi-Howrah, Mumbai-Howrah, Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Guwahati, Delhi-Chennai, Howrah-Chennai and Mumbai-Chennai. In railway terminology, these routes are classified as High Density Network (HDN).

The challenge on these routes is not limited to the number of trains operating on them. The same tracks are used by passenger trains, long-distance trains and freight trains. As the number of freight and passenger trains continues to rise, the need to expand capacity on the existing network has also increased rapidly. This has prompted the Railways to work on measures aimed at increasing capacity across the rail network.

A High Density Network refers to a railway network on which a much larger number of trains operate compared with a normal route, placing continuous pressure on the capacity of the tracks.

The Railways has long identified seven major routes under this category: Delhi-Howrah, Mumbai-Howrah, Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Guwahati, Delhi-Chennai, Howrah-Chennai and Mumbai-Chennai.

The government had already listed these seven routes as High Density Rail Networks in 2015. At the time, measures including doubling of tracks, construction of third and fourth lines, signalling improvements, yard upgrades and other capacity-enhancement projects were proposed for these routes.

The focus on these seven corridors reflects the continuing requirement to handle rising passenger and freight movement while addressing capacity constraints on existing railway infrastructure. With passenger trains, long-distance services and freight trains sharing the same tracks, capacity expansion remains a key requirement across these high-density routes.
