Trump Promises $5,000 to Every Adult American if Republicans Win Both Houses
Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 payment to every adult American if Republicans retain both houses in November, while defending the Iran war and tariffs amid weak approval ratings.
Addressing supporters in Dallas, Trump also urged them to approach the election as though he himself were on the ballot. His remarks came at a time when election surveys are showing Republicans trailing Democrats.
Speaking at the convention, Trump said that if Republicans win, voters would win with them and receive $5,000. He referred to the proposed payment as a “Trump Dividend.”
The proposal is estimated to cost at least trillion. It is considered difficult from both economic and political perspectives. Trump did not clarify where such a large amount of money would come from, saying only that the country is making a lot of money.
Trump also expressed confidence in his ability to help Republicans retain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in November. He told supporters, “I’m telling you, just assume that I’m on the ballot.” He then repeated, “I’m on the ballot, I’m on the ballot, just one more time.”
Trump’s comments came as his popularity has been under pressure. Recent opinion polls have shown his approval rating at a low level of 30 percent. Voter dissatisfaction over inflation and rising prices has also been increasing. Trump is additionally facing political pressure over the war he started with Iran.
According to estimates by Decision Desk HQ, Democrats could win 230 seats in the House of Representatives in the November election, while Republicans are projected to win 205 seats. In the Senate, Democrats are also projected to secure a 51-49 majority.
During his speech, Trump repeatedly referred to the ongoing war with Iran and defended the conflict. His comments also indicated that the conflict has affected the US economy.
Trump said, “We were doing very well.” He then looked toward his economic advisers and said, “I don’t like doing this to you.” He explained that he had to launch the conflict against Iran because Iran was perhaps two or three weeks away from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Trump also suggested renaming the strategically important Strait of Hormuz after himself. Predicting victory in the war, he directly linked the outcome to falling oil prices.
Trump said food prices and the prices of almost everything else were falling rapidly. He added that once the US wins the war with Iran, which is currently ongoing, oil prices would also decline.
Trump also defended the broad tariffs imposed on the United States’ trading partner countries. He said the economic disruption created by the tariffs is necessary for their eventual benefits and that the results would be worth it.
