Pilot Refuses to Fly Mumbai-Bound IndiGo Flight at Varanasi Airport, Ruckus

A Mumbai-bound IndiGo flight from Varanasi faced disruption after its pilot refused to fly citing ill health. Passengers created a ruckus as the airline worked on an alternative arrangement.

A pilot of an IndiGo flight bound for Mumbai refused to operate the aircraft at around 10 am on Wednesday at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi, leaving passengers angry and triggering a commotion just before boarding. The airline management was working on an alternative arrangement to operate the flight, but the aircraft had still not departed by 2 pm.

The airport administration said the pilot refused duty citing ill health. At the same time, it also emerged that the pilot's scheduled duty hours had been completed.

The IndiGo flight 6E 6544 was ready to depart from Babatpur for Mumbai on Thursday morning. Meanwhile, the pilot refused to fly the aircraft, citing ill health. The development angered passengers present in the Security Hold Area (SHA), who began creating a ruckus. Airline management tried to pacify the protesting passengers.

Another issue that came to light was that the pilot had completed his scheduled duty hours. Under the rules, the pilot was required to take the necessary rest before operating the next flight. It was also reported that a lack of coordination between the duty roster and airline management may have led to the problem emerging at the last moment.
