Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed all senior MCD officials to remain on the ground during the enforcement drive. She also ordered an intensive inspection of all paying guest (PG) and hostel facilities across Delhi and called for swift action against illegal constructions.
The Chief Minister further directed authorities to identify officials responsible for illegal constructions found during inspections. Building records are to be examined to determine the year in which each structure was constructed and under whose jurisdiction the construction took place.
Following the building collapse in Satya Niketan, the MCD has intensified action against dangerous and illegal buildings. On Tuesday, the civic body demolished 17 buildings in different areas and sealed five properties. It also issued show-cause notices to nine people, sealing notices to two people and demolition orders to 15 people.
On Tuesday, MCD teams carried out action in several areas, including Saidulajab, Laxmi Nagar, Vishwas Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Jamia Nagar, Shaheen Bagh, Tilak Nagar, Karam Pura, Karol Bagh, Ramesh Nagar, Mansarovar Garden, Chandni Chowk and Nehru Vihar. A large number of illegal buildings have been constructed in these areas. While maps for some houses were not approved, several others were constructed beyond the prescribed height limits. Several buildings were also found to have extremely weak structures.
On Monday, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta held a meeting with senior government and MCD officials and directed authorities to conduct inspection drives in areas with paying guest (PG) accommodation. Officials were specifically asked to inspect houses where, at first glance, violations of height and floor-related rules were suspected.
According to officials, between September 1 and September 8, the civic body carried out demolition action against 48 properties and sealed 15 properties. During the same period, the MCD issued 90 show-cause notices for unauthorised construction, 124 show-cause notices for sealing and 66 demolition orders.
Between June 1 and August 31, the MCD carried out demolition action against 959 properties and sealed 456 properties. During this period, the civic body issued 1,461 show-cause notices for unauthorised construction, 590 show-cause notices for sealing and 687 demolition orders.
The intensified enforcement drive following the Satya Niketan collapse has placed illegal and structurally unsafe buildings under heightened scrutiny, with the Delhi government directing the civic administration to accelerate inspections, identify violations and establish accountability for unauthorised construction.
