Organ Donation Awareness Drive in Ghatkopar Encourages Citizens to Become Lifesavers

The Indian Medical Association, Ghatkopar, and Zynova Shalby Hospital organised a large-scale organ donation awareness programme in Mumbai to educate citizens about the life-saving importance of organ donation. The initiative featured interactive activities, expert insights, and community participation aimed at increasing organ donor registrations and supporting patients awaiting transplants across India.

MUMBAI: In a major effort to promote organ donation and encourage citizens to pledge their organs, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Ghatkopar, in association with Zynova Shalby Hospital, organised a large-scale organ donation awareness programme that brought together doctors, healthcare professionals, and members of the public under a common mission of spreading awareness about the gift of life.

The awareness initiative featured a series of interactive activities designed to educate and engage participants. Citizens enthusiastically displayed messages supporting organ donation, while a treasure hunt and car decoration competition were organised to make the campaign more engaging and informative. The activities encouraged meaningful discussions about organ donation among families and communities, helping participants better understand its significance.

The programme was attended by Dr. Kalpesh Shah, President of IMA NEBS; Dr. Urvi Maheshwari, Secretary; Dr. Neha Shah, Treasurer; members of IMA NEBS; and Reny Varghese, Chief Operating Officer of Zynova Shalby Hospital.

The organisers highlighted the growing healthcare challenge posed by the shortage of donated organs in India. Every year, thousands of patients suffering from end-stage organ failure await life-saving transplants. However, the number of available organs remains far below the demand. The campaign aimed to bridge this gap by encouraging more individuals to pledge their organs and contribute to saving lives.

Recognising the urgent need to increase awareness, Zynova Shalby Hospital supported and sponsored the initiative as part of its commitment to patient care, community outreach, and health education. Through its partnership with IMA NEBS, the hospital sought to strengthen public dialogue on organ donation and motivate citizens to make informed decisions that could save multiple lives.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Kalpesh Shah, President of IMA NEBS, said that organ donation is a cause that requires collective participation from healthcare professionals, institutions, policymakers, and the public. He praised Zynova Shalby Hospital for taking a proactive role in bringing the issue to the forefront and stated that such initiatives help spread awareness, build trust, and encourage citizens to view organ donation as a life-saving act of generosity.

Dr. Shah further explained that a brain-dead individual can donate skin, eyes, liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, and pancreas. Despite this potential, he noted that the demand for organs in India continues to significantly exceed the number of donations being made.

Reny Varghese, Chief Operating Officer of Zynova Shalby Hospital, said that organ donation has the power to transform tragedy into hope by saving multiple lives through a single selfless decision. He noted that many patients continue to wait for transplants because awareness and registration levels remain low.

He added that the hospital believes awareness is the first step toward increasing organ donation rates. Through the initiative, the organisers aimed to engage directly with the community, address misconceptions, and encourage families to discuss organ donation openly. He said that every donor has the potential to become a hero for several patients and their loved ones.

Among the participants was 17-year-old Arindam Joshi, the youngest participant in the rally, who said the event helped him understand that organ donation is not merely a medical decision but a gift of life that offers hope to families during their most difficult moments. He said the awareness activities inspired him to pledge his organs and contribute to saving lives even after his lifetime. He also pledged to encourage his family and friends to learn more about organ donation and join the life-saving movement.

Through activities such as the treasure hunt and car decoration competition, the organisers successfully engaged the community while promoting awareness about organ donation. The initiative sought to inspire more citizens to pledge their organs, offering hope to countless patients awaiting transplants and strengthening the nationwide movement toward greater organ donation awareness.
