Government Rejects Reports of Proposed India-Gulf Deep-Sea Energy Pipeline
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has categorically denied reports that India is pursuing a proposed deep-sea energy pipeline connecting Gujarat with Oman and other Gulf nations. The government clarified that no such project is under consideration and that no discussions or negotiations are taking place at any level.
In an official clarification issued on Tuesday, the Ministry said it had taken note of a series of media reports suggesting that India was actively working on a deep-sea energy pipeline, sometimes referred to as the Middle East-India Deepwater Pipeline (MEIDP), which was reportedly intended to connect Gujarat with Oman and other Gulf countries.
Dismissing the reports, the Ministry categorically stated that no such proposal is presently under consideration. It further clarified that there are no active discussions or negotiations with Oman or any other Gulf nation regarding the project at any level within the Ministry.
The Ministry emphasized that the clarification was being issued to end all speculation surrounding the reported pipeline proposal. It reiterated that the claims circulating in sections of the media do not reflect any ongoing policy initiative or official engagement related to such a project.
India remains one of the world’s largest importers of crude oil and natural gas, with the Gulf region continuing to serve as a crucial source of energy supplies. While the country has consistently explored opportunities to strengthen energy cooperation with Gulf nations, the Ministry’s statement provides clear assurance to stakeholders and industry observers by confirming that the reported deep-sea pipeline project is not under consideration and is not the subject of any ongoing discussions.
The clarification is significant as it settles widespread speculation regarding the feasibility and status of the proposed Middle East-India Deepwater Pipeline, reaffirming the government’s position and providing certainty on a matter that had attracted considerable public and industry attention.
