Responding to the directives issued by the acting head of the Akal Takht, Mann stated that the individual seen in the viral video is not him. He said he was shocked that people occupying such a significant religious position were allegedly acting as political instruments. According to the Chief Minister, the person featured in the video neither resembles his facial appearance nor matches his physical build.
Mann described the video as part of a propaganda campaign aimed at defaming him. He claimed that his government's decisions concerning the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, Punjab's water resources, agriculture, and youth welfare had become unacceptable to his opponents, who were now resorting to disinformation and the misuse of religion for political purposes.
The Chief Minister reiterated that he considers the Akal Takht the highest religious institution and bows before it with respect. He stated that neither he nor future generations of his family could ever think of showing disrespect to the institution. However, he questioned what he described as politically motivated appointments within the Akal Takht and said the Sikh community was fully aware of the nature of the decisions being made.
The controversy erupted after the Akal Takht, regarded as the highest temporal authority of the Sikh community, declared Bhagwant Mann a "betrayer of the Guru" and "opponent of the Khalsa Panth" on Monday. The declaration was linked to a controversial video circulating on social media in which a person resembling the Chief Minister allegedly appeared. The video had previously prompted questions from leaders of both the Congress party and the Shiromani Akali Dal.
The Akal Takht stated that the video had been examined by two forensic laboratories and was found to be authentic. Religious authorities asserted that the footage had not been tampered with and was not generated using Artificial Intelligence technology. Acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj revealed that the Akal Takht Secretariat had contacted the Chief Minister in January through an official letter regarding the investigation into the video.
During a meeting held at the Akal Takht Sahib on Monday, several significant decisions were announced against the Punjab government and the Chief Minister. Acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj issued directives against Mann over the alleged disregard of instructions concerning amendments to the sacrilege law and other related matters.
The Akal Takht has also summoned all members of the Punjab Cabinet and Sikh legislators associated with the matter to appear before the institution on June 29. Following the meeting, the Jathedar stated that the Sikh community had instructed the Punjab government to remove objectionable provisions from the law dealing with disrespect toward Sri Guru Granth Sahib. An official communication had reportedly directed the government to implement amendments within 15 days.
According to the Akal Takht, more than a month has passed without any substantial action from the state government. Religious authorities described this as a violation of the institution's directives. The Jathedar warned that the Sikh community would not allow the law to be implemented without the requested amendments. He said the legislation contains provisions that have drawn objections from the Sikh community and cannot be accepted unless those concerns are addressed.
Emphasizing the authority and dignity of the Akal Takht Sahib, the Jathedar stated that no compromise could be made regarding its supremacy. As a result, all Sikh legislators who supported the bill, along with the entire Punjab Cabinet, have been ordered to appear before the Akal Takht on June 29 to present their position.
The escalating confrontation between Punjab's elected government and the highest Sikh religious authority has intensified political and religious tensions in the state, placing both the controversial video and the disputed sacrilege legislation at the center of a major public and institutional conflict.
