Upcoming Hybrid and Electric SUVs Set to Transform India's Automotive Market
India's SUV market is set for a major shift with the arrival of new hybrid and electric models from Toyota, Tata Motors, Kia, and Hyundai. Upcoming launches such as the Toyota Fortuner Hybrid, Tata Sierra EV, Kia Sorento Hybrid, and Hyundai Creta Hybrid are expected to introduce advanced technology, improved efficiency, and expanded consumer choice across multiple segments.
Toyota is currently developing the next-generation Fortuner, with test vehicles already spotted in international markets. The upcoming model is expected to feature a completely refreshed exterior design, a modernized cabin, and an expanded list of features. International variants are likely to be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options alongside hybrid technology. Toyota is also expected to enhance the vehicle's off-road capabilities while improving overall comfort for daily use. The new Fortuner will continue to be based on the ladder-frame platform shared with the Hilux pickup truck.
Meanwhile, Tata Motors is preparing to introduce the Sierra EV, which will be positioned above the Nexon EV and Curvv EV in the company's electric vehicle portfolio. The electric SUV is expected to be available with 65 kWh and 75 kWh battery pack options. Both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations are likely to be offered. Tata may also equip the Sierra EV with Vehicle-to-Load and Vehicle-to-Vehicle charging capabilities, enabling the SUV to power external devices and charge other electric vehicles.
Kia is also advancing its electric vehicle strategy with a new compact electric SUV based on the Syros platform. The model is expected to be manufactured in India and will compete directly with the Tata Nexon EV, Punch EV, and Mahindra XUV400. Similar to the standard Syros, the electric version is likely to feature a comprehensive package of connected car technology, premium features, and modern safety equipment. The vehicle is expected to strengthen Kia's growing electric vehicle lineup in the Indian market.
In the premium segment, Kia is expected to introduce the Sorento Hybrid as a new three-row sport utility vehicle. The model is likely to be powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a hybrid system, generating approximately 227 horsepower. The SUV is also expected to offer dual 12.3-inch displays, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, and a range of premium comfort and convenience features. If launched, the Sorento Hybrid will provide consumers with an additional option in the premium SUV category.
Hyundai is also working on the next-generation Creta, which is expected to receive a strong hybrid powertrain for the first time. Reports indicate that the new model will feature a redesigned exterior, a more premium interior, and advanced technology upgrades. The same hybrid system could also be introduced in the next-generation Kia Seltos and Hyundai's upcoming three-row SUV. As one of India's best-selling sport utility vehicles, the Creta Hybrid is expected to attract significant market attention upon its arrival.
The upcoming wave of hybrid and electric SUVs highlights the rapid evolution of India's automotive sector. With manufacturers focusing on electrification, advanced technology, and enhanced efficiency, consumers are set to benefit from a broader range of modern sport utility vehicles across multiple segments.
