According to officials, five patients died on Thursday after smoke filled the ICU ward due to a short circuit. Reports indicate that hospital staff allegedly fled the scene during the emergency, leaving critically ill patients unattended. A sixth patient later succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at another healthcare facility on Friday.
Muzaffarpur District Public Relations Officer Pramod Kumar stated that, “In view of the hospital management’s disregard for safety standards and negligence, the Civil Surgeon of Muzaffarpur has suspended the registration of Prasad Hospital with immediate effect.”
The Civil Surgeon has also directed the hospital management to submit a detailed explanation along with relevant records and evidence within seven days.
Muzaffarpur Superintendent of Police Mohibullah Ansari confirmed that three hospital staff members have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Director General (Fire) Shobha Ahotkar, speaking to PTI Video in the state capital on Thursday, confirmed that all six deaths were caused by asphyxiation and that no burn injuries were found on the deceased.
The incident has intensified scrutiny over hospital safety protocols and emergency response mechanisms in private healthcare facilities, raising urgent questions about compliance and accountability in life-saving medical environments.
