Prime Minister Inaugurates ₹2,970 Crore Development Projects in Daman, Unveils Airport Terminal and 200-Bed Hospital
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated ₹2,970 crore development projects in Daman, including a 180-passenger Namo Airport terminal and a 200-bed NAMO Hospital with advanced neonatal care. The event followed major ₹21,700 crore initiatives in Surat, featuring infrastructure expansion, while political debate emerged over NAMO branding amid public engagement and roadshow celebrations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated development projects worth ₹2,970 crore in Daman, marking a significant expansion of regional infrastructure and public services. The initiative prominently includes the newly developed Namo Airport terminal and a 200-bed NAMO Hospital, both positioned as key additions to the region’s connectivity and healthcare capacity.
The Namo Airport terminal has been designed to accommodate 180 passengers and is set to enable direct flight connectivity to Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Surat, strengthening Daman’s aviation network. Alongside this, the 200-bed NAMO Hospital has been equipped to handle up to 1,500 outpatient visits daily and includes advanced neonatal care facilities aimed at improving critical maternal and infant health services.
The inauguration in Daman followed a series of large-scale development initiatives earlier launched in Surat, Gujarat, collectively valued at over ₹21,700 crore. During those events, foundation stones were laid for multiple major infrastructure projects, including an iconic bridge, a convention centre, and a National Institute of Fashion Technology campus, contributing an additional ₹1,630 crore in planned investment.
For years, the people of Daman had to travel over 100 km just to catch a commercial flight. Today, that journey begins closer home.

The events were accompanied by a festive roadshow, during which large crowds gathered and participated enthusiastically following community cleanliness drives conducted in the region. The atmosphere reflected strong public engagement with the development programmes being rolled out across the region.
However, the branding of several projects under the “NAMO” label drew criticism from political commentator Prashant Bhushan, who referenced earlier concerns raised in similar naming practices. Supporters of the initiative defended the nomenclature, stating that the projects are funded through public resources and reflect the mandate granted to the Prime Minister by the electorate.
The inauguration underscores a broader push toward infrastructure expansion, healthcare modernization, and regional connectivity enhancement across Daman and Gujarat, positioning these developments as part of a larger national development agenda.
