India, Venezuela Deepen Energy Partnership as Oil Trade Surges After Maduro's Ouster

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Venezuelan leader Delcy Rodríguez discussed energy, trade and strategic cooperation in New Delhi as India increased Venezuelan oil imports following the lifting of sanctions. The renewed partnership comes after Nicolás Maduro's ouster and highlights India's efforts to diversify crude supplies amid Middle East tensions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Venezuelan leader Delcy Rodríguez in New Delhi on Thursday, underscoring a renewed push to strengthen bilateral ties in energy, trade and strategic cooperation following the dramatic political changes in Venezuela after the removal of former President Nicolás Maduro.

The meeting comes as India significantly increases its purchases of Venezuelan crude oil after the lifting of sanctions, positioning Venezuela among the country's key energy suppliers. Venezuelan oil exports to India have risen to between 280,000 and 427,000 barrels per day, making the South American nation the third-largest spot supplier of crude to India and helping New Delhi diversify its energy sources amid continuing tensions in the Middle East.

Energy cooperation dominated the discussions between the two sides, with both countries highlighting the mutual economic benefits of closer engagement. Officials emphasized that India's growing imports of Venezuelan crude are driven by commercial considerations and energy security requirements, reflecting a pragmatic approach to strengthening economic relations.

The talks took place against the backdrop of major political developments in Venezuela. Former President Nicolás Maduro was captured by United States forces in January 2026, leading to a transition in leadership and opening a new chapter in Venezuela's international relations. The evolving political landscape has coincided with expanded economic engagement between India and Venezuela, particularly in the energy sector.

However, the diplomatic engagement has also attracted political attention. Despite these concerns, officials from both countries maintained that the discussions were focused on advancing bilateral interests and strengthening cooperation across key sectors.
