RG Kar Rape and Murder Case: Calcutta High Court Orders Fresh CBI Probe Into Alleged Evidence Destruction

The Calcutta High Court has ordered a fresh CBI investigation into alleged evidence destruction and attempts to suppress the 2024 RG Kar rape and murder case. A three-member Special Investigation Team will probe the sequence of events from the victim’s final hours to her cremation, following serious allegations raised by the victim’s parents.

In a major development in the 2024 RG Kar rape and murder case that shook the nation, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered a fresh investigation into allegations of evidence destruction and attempts to downplay the crime. The court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to constitute a three-member Special Investigation Team to reinvestigate the claims linked to the handling of evidence in the case.

The decision was issued by a division bench comprising Justices Shampa Sarkar and Tirthankar Ghosh. The bench stated that the SIT would be headed by the CBI Joint Director of the Eastern Zone, while the identities of the remaining two members must be finalised within 48 hours.

The case triggered nationwide outrage after a young trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered inside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 9, 2024. The incident sparked massive protests, demands for justice, and intense scrutiny over the handling of the investigation.

During the hearing, the High Court directed the SIT to thoroughly examine the sequence of events beginning from the time the victim had dinner on the night of the incident until her cremation. The bench observed that the case carried serious social implications and therefore required an independent and comprehensive investigation into the allegations raised by the victim’s parents.

The victim’s family has alleged that evidence related to the crime was deliberately destroyed and that there were organised attempts to suppress and downplay the seriousness of the incident. The court acknowledged the gravity of these allegations while granting the CBI complete authority to question any individual considered necessary during the course of the investigation.

The High Court further directed the SIT to submit its investigation report by June 25, when the matter will be taken up for hearing again.

Earlier, the parents of the victim had approached the court seeking a separate probe into the rape and murder of their daughter. They claimed that more than one person was involved in the crime and raised concerns regarding the conduct of the initial investigation.

In connection with the case, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy had been arrested and later sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime. However, the fresh probe ordered by the High Court has reopened critical questions regarding the alleged destruction of evidence and the possibility of a larger conspiracy linked to the handling of the investigation.

The court’s latest intervention marks a significant turning point in one of the country’s most disturbing criminal cases, intensifying scrutiny over institutional accountability and the integrity of the investigative process surrounding the RG Kar tragedy.
