Mumbai GMLR Twin Tunnel Project Advances as First Tunnel Boring Machine Nears Assembly Completion

Officials stated that assembly work of the first Tunnel Boring Machine at the launch shaft near Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari is expected to be completed by mid-June. The development marks a critical step forward in one of the city’s major infrastructure projects aimed at improving east–west connectivity.

Simultaneously, assembly work on the second Tunnel Boring Machine is also progressing, indicating parallel advancement of key tunnelling infrastructure required for the project. Once both machines are fully assembled, excavation activities are expected to begin in the coming months.

Before tunnelling operations commence, the first Tunnel Boring Machine will undergo a comprehensive Site Acceptance Test. This evaluation is a mandatory technical procedure designed to verify the performance, safety standards, and system integration of the machine. The assessment will examine mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, control, and safety systems to ensure full operational readiness in compliance with project specifications.

The progress of the twin tunnel works and associated infrastructure was reviewed during a site inspection conducted by Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar, who assessed the overall status of construction activities at the site.

The advancement of the GMLR tunnel project represents a significant phase in Mumbai’s underground transport infrastructure development, with large-scale tunnelling operations now approaching execution.
