Marco Rubio Lands in India for High-Stakes Quad Diplomacy Tour Amid Energy Security Concerns
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio begins a four-day visit to India, starting in Kolkata and continuing to New Delhi for the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Summit. The visit includes meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussions on energy security amid global tensions affecting the Persian Gulf region.
Earlier the same day, Rubio commenced his maiden India visit in Kolkata, where he first visited the Mother House, the headquarters of Saint Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. Upon arrival, he was received by the sisters of the Missionaries of Charity and spent approximately one hour at the institution.
Following his visit to the Mother House, Rubio proceeded to Nirmala Sishu Bhawan, an orphanage operated by the Missionaries of Charity. He later visited the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. Security arrangements were significantly strengthened at both the Mother House and the Victoria Memorial in view of the high-profile diplomatic visit.
Rubio’s India itinerary, spanning from May 23 to May 26, includes scheduled visits to Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. The visit is being closely observed for its strategic importance, particularly as it includes energy-focused discussions with Indian officials and participation in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ engagement.
The diplomatic tour comes at a time of heightened global tensions linked to ongoing hostilities in the Persian Gulf region, which have raised concerns over energy security for India. In response to a question regarding the impact of rising energy prices following disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, Rubio described India as a “great partner” and expressed anticipation for discussions with Quad foreign ministers.
The visit is widely seen as a critical moment in strengthening Indo-U.S. strategic coordination within the Quad framework, while addressing pressing global energy challenges.
