Bengaluru–Mumbai Bi-Weekly Express Train Launched, Boosting Direct Rail Connectivity Between Karnataka and Maharashtra

The Ministry of Railways has launched a new bi-weekly express train between Bengaluru and Mumbai, flagged off by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on May 17, 2026. The service covers 1,210 km in 24 hours and 5 minutes, linking key cities across Karnataka and Maharashtra, with operations starting from May 23 and May 24, 2026.

 

The Ministry of Railways has officially inaugurated a new bi-weekly express train service connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai, marking a significant expansion in direct rail connectivity between Karnataka and Maharashtra. The service was virtually flagged off on May 17, 2026, by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, introducing a new long-distance travel corridor designed to enhance passenger movement across key urban and industrial regions.

The newly introduced SMVT Bengaluru–Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express will operate under Train Numbers 16553 and 16554. During its inaugural run, the service operated as a one-way special train numbered 06557. The train is operated and maintained by South Western Railway, reinforcing its role in managing key inter-state rail services.

Regular operations are scheduled to commence from Bengaluru on May 23, 2026, while services departing from Mumbai will begin on May 24, 2026. The train will cover a total distance of 1,210 kilometres in 24 hours and 5 minutes, offering a direct and time-efficient travel option between the two major metropolitan cities.

The route significantly improves connectivity across Karnataka and Maharashtra, linking Bengaluru with the Hubballi-Dharwad region, Belagavi, Pune, and Mumbai. The service is expected to facilitate smoother travel for passengers across major economic and educational hubs along the route.

The SMVT Bengaluru–Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express will halt at 15 stations, including Tumakuru, Davangere, SSS Hubballi, Dharwar, Belagavi, Miraj, Sangli, Karad, Satara, Lonand, Pune, Lonavala, Karjat, Kalyan, and Thane. Each stop has been strategically included to enhance regional accessibility and inter-city connectivity.
