Electric Vehicles Gain Momentum in India as Consumers Prioritise Cleaner Air, Lower Costs and Sustainable Mobility

India’s electric vehicle market is witnessing rapid growth as consumers seek cleaner air, lower operating costs and sustainable transportation. VinFast is accelerating this shift through manufacturing investments, advanced electric vehicles, and comprehensive ownership benefits, including free charging, extended warranties and assured buyback programmes.

India’s electric vehicle revolution is accelerating as a growing number of consumers embrace cleaner, quieter and more economical transportation. With rising concerns over air pollution, fuel expenses and long-term sustainability, electric vehicles are increasingly being viewed as a practical and future-ready mobility solution for Indian households. The trend has strengthened significantly in 2025 and continues to gather pace in 2026, supported by improving infrastructure, technological advances and attractive ownership incentives from manufacturers such as VinFast.

The Indian electric vehicle market recorded remarkable growth in 2025, with electric four-wheeler sales rising by 86 per cent year-on-year to more than 187,000 units. The momentum has continued into 2026. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, electric passenger vehicle sales surged by 75.14 per cent in April 2026, reaching 23,506 units compared with 13,421 units during the same month last year.

One of the strongest drivers of this shift is the urgent need to tackle air pollution in major Indian cities. Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru frequently experience hazardous Air Quality Index levels, particularly during winter and peak traffic periods. The World Health Organization has linked air pollution to nearly seven million premature deaths worldwide each year. Unlike conventional petrol and diesel vehicles, electric vehicles generate no tailpipe emissions, helping reduce carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide, which are known to contribute to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Electric vehicles also help address another major urban concern: noise pollution. Constant exposure to engine sounds, traffic congestion and excessive honking has been associated with increased stress, sleep disorders and heart-related risks. Electric vehicles produce significantly lower powertrain noise at low speeds. Studies have shown that they can generate four to five decibels less noise than conventional vehicles, especially below 30 kilometres per hour. This reduction is particularly beneficial in densely populated residential areas, school zones and city streets dominated by stop-and-go traffic.

Economic considerations remain one of the most compelling reasons for Indian families to switch to electric mobility. Charging an electric vehicle generally costs far less than refuelling with petrol or diesel. Electric vehicles also require less maintenance because they do not need engine oil changes, spark plug replacements or exhaust system servicing. VinFast customers in India can benefit from even greater savings through the company’s complimentary charging programme at V-GREEN charging stations until March 31, 2029.

Research presented at the ICMPT 2026 international conference by scientists from Hanoi University of Science and Technology has further strengthened confidence in electric vehicle durability. The study concluded that electric vehicles experience lower long-term mechanical wear because of their simpler drivetrain design. The analysis was based on theoretical reliability models and maintenance records from nearly 5,700 vehicles. It also cited findings from more than 300 million vehicle inspection records in the United Kingdom, indicating that newer electric vehicles may achieve an average lifespan of up to 18.4 years.

Electric vehicle ownership can also promote healthier travel habits. Fast-charging stops encourage drivers and passengers to take regular breaks during long journeys, reducing fatigue associated with extended periods of sitting. Rahul, a VinFast VF 6 owner in Bengaluru, said that his family now naturally takes short breaks for coffee and walking during charging sessions, resulting in less exhaustion by the end of road trips.

The expansion of electric mobility is also reshaping urban development. Governments and private companies across India are investing heavily in charging infrastructure, renewable energy integration and cleaner transportation systems. VinFast is contributing to this transformation by developing a comprehensive electric vehicle ecosystem in India that includes manufacturing, dealerships, charging partnerships, after-sales services and financing solutions.

The company’s manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, is emerging as a major production centre for the region. The plant represents an investment of 500 million United States dollars and is expected to produce 150,000 vehicles annually when fully operational. It is also projected to generate approximately 3,500 direct jobs.

VinFast currently offers the VF 6 and VF 7 electric sport utility vehicles in India. Both models have earned five-star Bharat NCAP safety ratings and are equipped with advanced features. They have also received significant recognition in the domestic market. The VF 7 was honoured with the “EV SUV of the Year – Editor’s Choice” award at the BBC TopGear India Awards 2026, while the VF 6 won the “Value for Money Car of the Year” title at the Autocar India Awards 2026.

The company has now expanded into the multi-purpose vehicle segment with the introduction of the VF MPV 7. Designed with family comfort and long-distance travel in mind, the premium electric vehicle features a spacious three-row cabin, a MIDC-certified driving range of 517 kilometres, fast-charging capability and advanced connected technology.

To accelerate adoption, VinFast is offering an extensive package of ownership benefits in India. These include free charging at V-GREEN stations until March 31, 2029, three years of complimentary maintenance, a ten-year battery warranty, a seven-year vehicle warranty, a five-year suspension warranty, a seven-year paint warranty and seven years of roadside assistance. The company is also providing up to 75 per cent assured buyback value for its electric multi-purpose vehicle.

VinFast, listed on NASDAQ under the symbol VFS, is a subsidiary of Vingroup JSC, one of Vietnam’s largest conglomerates. As a dedicated electric vehicle manufacturer, the company aims to make electric mobility accessible to all. Its product portfolio includes electric sport utility vehicles, electric scooters and electric buses, while its manufacturing footprint continues to expand across Vietnam, India and planned operations in the United States.

As India advances toward a cleaner and more sustainable transportation future, electric vehicles are emerging as more than just a technological innovation. They represent a meaningful response to urban pollution, rising fuel costs and changing consumer priorities. With increasing demand, expanding infrastructure and strong support from manufacturers such as VinFast, electric mobility is rapidly becoming a defining feature of India’s automotive landscape.
