Indian Government Condemns Attack on Indian-Flagged Vessel Off Oman Coast Amid Rising Maritime Tensions
India strongly condemned the attack on an Indian-flagged ship off Oman coast, calling it unacceptable and raising concerns over maritime security amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. The MEA confirmed crew safety and praised Omani rescue efforts while geopolitical friction between the US and Iran continues.
In an official statement issued by spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the Ministry said it deplored the persistent targeting of commercial shipping and civilian mariners. It confirmed that the Indian crew onboard the vessel was safe and expressed gratitude to the Omani authorities for conducting a rescue operation.
The statement further reiterated India’s position that attacks on commercial shipping and actions endangering innocent civilian crew members, or obstructing freedom of navigation and trade, must be avoided under all circumstances. However, the Ministry did not identify those responsible for the attack.
The incident occurred amid escalating tensions in international waters near the Strait of Hormuz, where geopolitical friction continues as the United States and Iran have failed to reach a comprehensive agreement to end their ongoing conflict, which remains in a temporary pause.
In a parallel diplomatic development, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New Delhi to participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, scheduled for Thursday, April 14, and Friday, April 15.
Addressing the BRICS forum in New Delhi, Araghchi stated that Iran views BRICS as a symbol of an emerging global order, where the Global South plays a central role in shaping the future of international affairs. He described this development as both significant and fragile, warning that declining imperial powers were attempting to reverse global shifts through aggressive actions.
He further linked Iran’s regional stance to broader ideological and geopolitical struggles, describing it as part of a wider resistance against Western dominance. Araghchi asserted that Iran’s military personnel had made sacrifices in confronting what he referred to as Western hegemony and the perceived immunity of the United States.
He also emphasized that Iran’s actions align with the broader interests of BRICS nations and called for intensified efforts to challenge what he described as global superiority narratives in the contemporary world.
Meanwhile, public attention also turned to broader international developments, including ongoing updates related to the diplomatic and geopolitical situation involving the United States and China.
The attack on the Indian-flagged vessel, occurring amid sensitive regional dynamics and high-level diplomatic engagements in New Delhi, underscores the growing risks to commercial shipping routes and the fragile state of international maritime security.
