National Boxer Dies of Suspected Drug Overdose in Mansa; Grieving Father Says Addiction Claimed His Only Son

National boxer Navdeep Singh, 20, from Mansa died of a suspected drug overdose, according to his family. The medal-winning athlete's father said addiction claimed his only son and demanded strict action against drug traffickers. Police have registered a case against unidentified suppliers as anti-drug activists renewed calls for a crackdown.

A 20-year-old national-level boxer from Mansa has died after allegedly consuming drugs, in a tragic incident that has once again brought Punjab's drug crisis into sharp focus. The deceased, Navdeep Singh, a resident of Ward Number 3, had won several medals in boxing and was regarded as a promising athlete. His family has confirmed that he died due to drug overdose.

Navdeep Singh's father, Jaspal Singh, said his son was a talented boxer who had earned multiple medals and made the family proud. However, he said that addiction ultimately destroyed his son's life. In an emotional statement, Jaspal Singh said that Navdeep was his only son and that he was speaking openly about the cause of death so that no other family would have to suffer a similar tragedy. He demanded strict action against those involved in the sale of drugs and said that traffickers must be held accountable for the deaths of young people.

The incident has triggered strong reactions from anti-drug activists. Parvinder Singh Jhota, who has been vocal in the campaign against narcotics, said drugs are being sold openly across the region. He pointed out that Navdeep died at the same time as the Chief Minister was addressing a public gathering in Mansa, underscoring what he described as the stark reality of the ongoing drug menace.

Jhota criticized those who claim to be waging a war against drugs, saying they appear unaware of where the battle is actually being fought. He questioned why no decisive action has been taken against drug traffickers and warned that young people will continue to lose their lives unless authorities move swiftly and firmly against those responsible for the illegal trade.

Based on those statements, a case has been registered against unidentified individuals who allegedly supplied the drugs to the deceased, and further investigation is underway.
