BMC Begins Extensive Preparations at Deonar Abattoir Ahead of Eid al-Adha 2026
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has launched extensive preparations at the Deonar Abattoir ahead of Eid al-Adha 2026, with large-scale security deployment, sanitation drives, medical aid, water supply, QR-based monitoring systems and animal management measures planned across Mumbai for the festival period.
According to civic officials, the animal market for buffaloes and goats will operate at the Deonar Abattoir from May 17 to May 30, while Eid al-Adha is expected to be observed on May 28. Preparatory measures were reviewed during a high-level meeting held at the BMC headquarters under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr. Ashwini Joshi. Officials from multiple municipal departments and associated agencies participated in the assessment of festival readiness.
The civic administration stated that permission has been granted at 109 locations across Mumbai for religious animal slaughter between May 28 and May 30. Citizens seeking approval for slaughter at designated or other approved locations will be required to register through the MyBMC mobile application. The BMC has also enabled online systems for buffalo and goat import permits as well as slot booking for religious slaughter activities.
Officials said allotment of animal sheds at the Deonar facility will be conducted through a computerized first-come, first-served system to streamline operations during the high-demand period. However, the civic body clarified that buffalo slaughter will be permitted exclusively at the Deonar Abattoir in accordance with the existing religious slaughter policy.
To strengthen emergency response and public assistance, the BMC will operate a round-the-clock control room throughout the festival period. Dedicated helpline numbers, including 9076000481, 9076000482, 9076000483 and 9076000484, will remain active for complaints, guidance and emergency support.
Massive security arrangements have also been planned at the Deonar complex. Civic officials confirmed that 21 police outposts, two watch towers, nearly 500 police personnel and around 200 civic security guards will be deployed across the site. Surveillance at the facility will be conducted through a network of more than 500 CCTV cameras, including permanent, bullet, dome and PTZ cameras, while temporary surveillance systems will also be installed during the festival period.
The civic administration stated that a total shelter area measuring 110,106 square metres has been arranged for animals through permanent and temporary facilities. An additional 10,000 square metre area has been separately earmarked for buffalo slaughter operations.
To meet the sharp increase in demand during the festival season, the BMC said an additional one million litres of water will be supplied over the regular daily allocation of 1.3 million litres. Nearly 150 water tanks along with several water kiosks will be installed across the premises to ensure uninterrupted supply.
Medical and veterinary arrangements have also been intensified. The Deonar facility will have two health centres, two ambulances, two veterinary health centres and veterinarians assigned for animal inspections and emergency medical support.
The BMC further stated that nearly 7,500 metric tonnes of waste are expected to be generated during the 15-day operational period. In response, sanitation workers, vehicles and heavy machinery will be deployed for continuous waste collection and disposal. Around 600 sanitation workers will remain on duty during the three principal slaughter days to manage cleanliness and hygiene.
Officials also announced that vehicles transporting meat during the slaughter period will not be charged any entry fee. Additional public facilities at the Deonar Abattoir will include permanent and mobile toilets, separate bathing facilities for women, dewatering pumps for monsoon preparedness, fire safety infrastructure and temporary food stalls for visitors.
In a move aimed at improving monitoring and operational efficiency, the civic administration said QR code-based verification systems will be installed at entry and exit points to regulate animal movement and streamline registration procedures.
The extensive preparations underscore the scale of operations expected at the Deonar Abattoir during Eid al-Adha 2026, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation focusing on security, sanitation, crowd management and public convenience to ensure smooth festival arrangements across Mumbai.
