Punjab Public Works Department Ordered to Meet Road Targets Amid Bitumen Shortage

Punjab Public Works Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO directs officials to meet road construction targets by June 30, 2026, despite bitumen shortages caused by Gulf conflicts, ensuring uninterrupted infrastructure development with alternative supply arrangements.

Chandigarh: Punjab Public Works Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO conducted a comprehensive review of the department’s ongoing projects, issuing strict directions to accelerate progress on the state’s road network under the Punjab government’s infrastructure push.

During the high-level meeting, the Cabinet Minister instructed officials to meet both financial and physical targets without delay. He emphasized that all road construction goals set by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann must be achieved within the stipulated deadline of June 30, 2026. Stressing urgency, he directed officials to ensure completion of all works with full efficiency and momentum.

The Minister underlined that there is no shortage of funds for infrastructure development, making it clear that delays would not be tolerated. He urged the department to maintain strict adherence to timelines while ensuring quality execution.

Addressing concerns over raw material supply, Harbhajan Singh ETO acknowledged that the ongoing conflict in Gulf countries has led to a shortage of bitumen, a critical component for road construction. However, he stated that the department has proactively managed the situation. In response to supply disruptions from the Bathinda Refinery, alternative arrangements have been secured, including sourcing from Panipat, Mathura Refinery, and other locations.
