US Congressman Bill Huizenga Says New Trade Deal Could Deepen India–US Ties and Counter China’s Influence

US Representative Bill Huizenga highlighted India’s rapid economic growth and urged stronger trade engagement during a key House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee hearing. He said a renewed Trump–Modi trade deal could deepen India–US ties, support American market access, and help counter China while securing a free and open Indo-Pacific.

The strategic weight of the India–US partnership took center stage in Washington as Representative Bill Huizenga underscored India’s accelerating economic rise and its growing relevance to American business interests. Speaking during a session of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on South and Central Asia, Huizenga said that India remains one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, and American companies are keen to secure equal and competitive access to its expanding market.

Huizenga emphasized that a renewed trade agreement, shaped under the leadership of former US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, could help advance those commercial goals while reinforcing the broader strategic relationship between the two countries. According to him, such a deal would not only support economic cooperation but also consolidate the geopolitical alignment necessary to address emerging regional challenges.

Pointing to the global balance of power, the US lawmaker noted that the world’s largest economy working in tandem with an economy poised to become the third largest would be well-positioned to counter China’s assertiveness. He added that closer collaboration between Washington and New Delhi could contribute to safeguarding a free and open Indo-Pacific—an objective that has become central to US foreign policy.

His remarks came during the hearing titled “The U.S.–India Strategic Partnership: Securing a Free and Open Indo-Pacific,” where officials and lawmakers discussed the expanding scope of bilateral relations, their implications for regional stability, and the urgent need to strengthen democratic, economic, and security cooperation.
