Air India plane crash: DVR recovery crucial to uncover cause; here's what the device records

New Delhi:

The digital video recorder (DVR) has been recovered from the wreckage of the Air India plane that experienced an accident. This recovery is expected to assist investigating agencies in determining the cause of the crash. The wreckage of Air India's Boeing Dreamliner, which was en route to London after departing from Ahmedabad airport, has been located near the district hospital. An officer from the ATS team involved in the investigation discovered the DVR onboard the aircraft, which may expedite the inquiry into the incident. Reports indicate that a total of 297 individuals have lost their lives as a result of the Ahmedabad plane crash. Out of the 242 people aboard the flight, 241 have been confirmed deceased, along with 56 additional fatalities linked to the crash in a residential area.

A high-level team has been assembled to conduct the investigation into this incident. Previously, the black box from the flight has also been recovered.

DVR, or digital video recorder, is a security device installed in aircraft. It records footage from the CCTV cameras present on the flight. The DVR utilized in aviation is specifically designed to withstand challenging conditions and can record for extended periods. Following the flight review, data from the DVR can be retrieved.

How DVR works

The DVR functions as a storage device equipped with a hard drive for local data retention. It stores footage from CCTV cameras located in the cockpit, passenger cabin, entry and exit gates, and emergency exits.

The device safely encodes the analog video signals from the CCTV cameras digitally. Most DVR camera recorders utilised in security applications employ signal encoding. The stored footage can be decoded when necessary. In the event of an airplane crash, the recorded footage from the DVR will be analysed to potentially identify the cause of the incident.
