Taiwan Bullet Train Video Misidentified as India's First Bullet Train

A viral video claimed to show India's first bullet train, but fact-checks traced the footage to Taiwan. Here is what the N700ST train has to do with Kaohsiung and India's 2027 bullet train plans.

A video circulating on social media as footage of India's first bullet train has been misidentified, with fact-checks confirming that the clip actually shows a high-speed train in Taiwan. The footage captured Taiwan's N700ST high-speed train arriving at Kaohsiung Port in August 2026, rather than a train associated with India's bullet train project.

The train seen in the viral video is one of 12 new sets being introduced for Taiwan's rail system. Taiwanese media reports and fact-checks confirmed the video's actual location and origin, correcting claims that it showed India's first bullet train.

The misleading posts triggered different reactions on social media. Some users celebrated the orange-coloured train, linking it to India's progress after 2014. Others described the development as an example of political 'Saffronisation'. However, subsequent corrections clarified that the footage was not related to India's railway manufacturing or bullet train programme.

India's Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project follows a separate manufacturing path. As of October 2026, around 80% of the land and structures required for the project had been completed. The trains for the project are being designed and built domestically by BEML in Bengaluru.

The first section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor, between Surat and Bilimora, is scheduled to begin operations in 2027. This distinguishes India's domestic train manufacturing programme from the Taiwanese high-speed train shown in the circulating video.

The clarification highlights the importance of verifying the origin of viral railway footage, particularly when it is presented as evidence of major infrastructure developments. While Taiwan's N700ST train was the subject of the video, India's bullet train project continues on its independent domestic manufacturing route.
