Chris Lynn Tested Positive for Cocaine Use, Served One-Month Ban in England
Former KKR batter Chris Lynn tested positive for a cocaine metabolite during England's T20 Blast and received a one-month ban. Find out how the ECB regulator reduced his suspension and what it means for his BBL future.
Lynn was playing for Northamptonshire in England's domestic T20 competition, the T20 Blast, at the time of the incident. He underwent a routine anti-doping test on July 18, during the tournament's Finals Day. Northamptonshire won the title that day, securing the T20 Blast trophy for the third time. Lynn scored 39 and 4 runs in the two matches played on Finals Day.
Subsequent testing of his urine sample at a laboratory in France detected the presence of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.
Lynn submitted his response to the cricket regulator on August 20 and admitted to using cocaine. He disclosed that he had consumed the substance over several hours, from the evening of July 15 until the early hours of July 16. He also clarified that the consumption took place outside a cricket competition and had no connection with his on-field performance.
Interestingly, on July 15, Lynn had represented Northamptonshire in their T20 Blast quarter-final against Gloucestershire. During the match, a low full toss from Duan Jansen struck his leg, forcing him to retire hurt and leave the field.
The England cricket regulator initially brought two charges against Lynn under the ECB's anti-doping regulations. However, one of the charges was subsequently withdrawn because the concentration of cocaine detected in his sample was too low to meet the minimum reporting threshold prescribed under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules for that particular offence.
The regulator initially proposed a three-month suspension. However, Lynn opted to participate in a treatment programme for substance-related issues. After completing the programme, he submitted supporting documents to the regulator in October, confirming its completion. Following this, his proposed punishment was reduced to one month.
Lynn's suspension remained in effect from July 31 to August 30, 2026. This means he had already completed the ban nearly two months before the regulator publicly disclosed the case. Northamptonshire did not face any separate sanction in connection with the incident.
Lynn is widely recognised for his aggressive batting in the IPL, where he made his debut for Deccan Chargers in 2012. However, it was his association with Kolkata Knight Riders that brought him significant recognition in the tournament.
He played 42 IPL matches, scoring 1,329 runs at an average of 34.07 and a strike rate of 140.63. His record includes 10 half-centuries. Lynn's highest IPL score was an unbeaten 93, which he scored for KKR in 2017.
The 2018 season was also successful for him, as he accumulated 491 runs in 16 matches. In 2019, he scored another 405 runs in 13 matches. He subsequently joined Mumbai Indians in 2021, scoring 49 runs in one appearance for the franchise.
At the international level, Lynn represented Australia in four One Day Internationals and 18 T20 Internationals, taking his international appearance tally to 22 matches. However, he established a greater reputation through T20 leagues around the world. He is among the most successful batters in the Big Bash League (BBL) and holds the record for scoring the most runs in the tournament.
Lynn is also in the news ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League season. According to Australian media reports, he has agreed to join the Melbourne Renegades, although an official contract has not yet been confirmed.
With his one-month suspension already completed, Lynn is available to play. However, any further disciplinary action in connection with the incident could be decided at the level of his new franchise. The regulator's disclosure has brought renewed attention to the case, even though the suspension had ended well before the announcement.
