Sarfaraz Khan's Stunning Catch Turns the Tide as Mumbai Beat Railways by 106 Runs
Mumbai defeated Railways by 106 runs in the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 at Brabourne Stadium after Sarfaraz Khan's stunning catch broke a 167-run partnership between Ishan Goyal and Zubair Ali.
Railways were moving towards a draw on the final day while chasing a target of 372 runs. Ishan Goyal and Zubair Ali had put together a 167-run partnership for the sixth wicket, keeping Mumbai's bowlers at bay for an extended period. However, Sarfaraz's spectacular effort triggered a collapse and put Mumbai firmly in control.
Goyal scored 103 runs, while Zubair contributed 115. The pair added 167 runs off 212 balls and remained at the crease for 156 minutes, significantly strengthening Railways' position in the chase.
The turning point came when Musheer Khan bowled to Goyal, who attempted a sweep shot. The ball took the top edge of his bat and went high into the air. Standing at first slip, Sarfaraz quickly ran towards the leg-slip region and completed a diving catch. Goyal's innings ended at 103, bringing the crucial partnership to an end.
Mumbai's fielders continued to deliver in the closing stages. Suryansh Shedge ran to his left from mid-off to take the catch of Zubair Ali, who departed after scoring 115. Tanush Kotian then took a one-handed catch at short midwicket to claim Railways' eighth wicket. Railways were eventually bowled out for 265, handing Mumbai a 106-run victory.
Earlier on the final day, Mumbai added 60 runs to their second-innings lead. Divyansh Saxena remained unbeaten on 100 off 136 balls, hitting eight fours and one six. His century helped Mumbai set Railways a target of 372 runs.
Railways had a difficult start to the chase and lost five wickets for 83 runs. Shams Mulani claimed four wickets, while Sarfaraz Khan also contributed with a run-out. Goyal and Zubair subsequently rebuilt the innings with their substantial sixth-wicket partnership, but Mumbai struck repeatedly during the final hour to seal the win.
Mumbai captain Siddhesh Lad said the team was not satisfied with its performances in the first four matches. He noted that Mumbai had also performed well during the league stages in the previous two seasons. However, the team's objective this time is to progress further, achieve something special and add a new chapter to its legacy.
Mumbai's 106-run victory over Railways was secured through a decisive final-hour bowling and fielding effort, with Sarfaraz Khan's catch proving a key moment in the match.
