Jamia Students Win 18-Day Protest as University Agrees to Restore Students’ Union

Jamia Millia Islamia students have ended their 18-day protest after the university accepted their demands. The administration has announced deadlines for approving the students’ union constitution and conducting elections in 2027.

Students at Jamia Millia Islamia have secured a major victory in their 18-day-long agitation for the restoration of the students’ union, bringing an end to the prolonged standoff between the university administration and protesting students.

Late at night, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif and Registrar Prof. Mahtab Alam Rizvi reached the hunger-striking students and informed them that all their demands had been accepted.

According to an order issued by the Registrar’s Office, the process of approving and implementing the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union Constitution will be completed by May 15, 2027.

Following the approval of the constitution, the university will issue a notification for conducting students’ union elections in accordance with the recommendations and guidelines of the Lyngdoh Committee. The notification date will comply with the timelines prescribed under the committee’s guidelines.

The students called off their agitation after Registrar Prof. Mohammad Mahtab Alam Rizvi handed over a copy of the official order confirming the administration’s decisions.

The breakthrough came after several rounds of negotiations between student representatives and university officials. Following their hunger strike and indefinite sit-in, students said they had succeeded in securing their primary demand: a fixed timeline for the restoration of the students’ union.

The student delegation involved in the negotiations included Mohiuddin, representing NSUI's Ebin Basil; Farhan Israel, representing Rehan Khan; Lubaib; Uttara; Neville Thomas; Sahad; and Habiba.

According to the students, the deadlock was resolved after three days of prolonged discussions, with intervention from Kerala MP Haris Beeran. He discussed the students’ demands with the Vice-Chancellor before arriving with the Registrar and announcing that all the students’ key demands had been accepted.

Students pointed out that the university had remained without a students’ union for the past 20 years. Despite the 18-day-long struggle, the deteriorating health of hunger strikers and rising tensions across the campus, they said the outcome marked a complete victory for their movement.

With the administration committing to a deadline for constitutional approval and elections, the agreement marks a significant development in the long-running demand for the restoration of democratic student representation at Jamia Millia Islamia.
