UP MLC Election Results: BJP Wins 6 Seats, SP Makes Gains With 5 Victories
Uttar Pradesh's 11 MLC election results have delivered a political setback for the BJP, with the Samajwadi Party winning five seats. Akhilesh Yadav highlights the Varanasi victories and targets the BJP over the outcome.
In the previous election, two seats were won by independent candidates. However, no independent candidate managed to secure a victory this time. The Gorakhpur Teachers' constituency, which was previously won by an independent candidate, went to the BJP. Meanwhile, the BJP lost the Lucknow Graduates' seat to the Samajwadi Party, which had been won by the BJP in the previous election.
Similarly, the Agra Teachers' seat, earlier held by an independent candidate, was won by the Samajwadi Party this time. However, beyond its victories in Agra and Lucknow, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav is particularly pleased that his party managed to retain both the Varanasi Teachers' and Graduates' constituencies.
The Samajwadi Party had won both Varanasi seats in the previous election as well. However, Akhilesh Yadav has described the party's latest victories as a major achievement.
The party-wise results across all 11 seats are as follows: the BJP won the Meerut Teachers', Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers', Lucknow Teachers', Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers', Agra Graduates' and Meerut Graduates' seats. The Samajwadi Party secured victories in the Varanasi Teachers', Varanasi Graduates', Agra Teachers', Lucknow Graduates' and Prayagraj-Jhansi Graduates' constituencies.
'Double Engine's Double Defeat': Akhilesh Yadav
Reacting to the results, Akhilesh Yadav targeted the BJP, describing the outcome as a double defeat for the ruling party. In a statement addressed to voters, he said, "Dear voters, the BJP has become a 'flop show'. In Varanasi, the BJP first lost during the counting and then lost again during the recounting. This means that votes were counted twice, and on both occasions, the BJP and its allies were defeated. This is the double defeat of the double engine government."
Akhilesh further claimed that the BJP's defeat in the Legislative Council elections had laid the groundwork for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
He described the outcome as a rejection of what he called the BJP's anti-teacher, anti-student and anti-education policies. He also said that educated unemployed graduates had delivered their verdict through the election results.
With the BJP retaining six seats and the Samajwadi Party increasing its tally to five, the results have highlighted the political contest between the two parties ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
