Vaibhav Suryavanshi Creates History at 15 in India vs New Zealand T20I
Vaibhav Suryavanshi made history at 15 years and 211 days in the India vs New Zealand second T20I in Christchurch on October 24. Find out which record he broke, why he replaced Ishan Kishan and India's playing XI.
India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first in the second T20I. The announcement of India's playing XI brought excitement among fans as Suryavanshi was handed an opportunity to make his mark at the international level. He replaced Ishan Kishan, who suffered an injury during the first T20I, and was named to bat at number three.
Suryavanshi's appearance in Christchurch placed him at the top of the list of the youngest male players to feature in an international match in New Zealand. He surpassed Mohammad Sharif, who played a Test match in Hamilton on December 18, 2001, at the age of 16 years and six days. Pakistan's Aaqib Javed, at 16 years and 185 days, and India's Sachin Tendulkar, at 16 years and 284 days, are also among the players on the list.
Speaking during the toss, captain Shreyas Iyer explained India's decision to bowl first, citing the possibility of dew as one of the reasons. He said, “We will bowl first. Dew is one of the reasons. It was good to get some time to recover and complete our sleep. Everyone is in good shape and in a good place. It is important to maintain aggression, but we have to be proactive and make sure we do not need an extra fielder inside. Two changes: Ishan is injured, Vaibhav comes in and will bat at number three. Prince replaces Mayank — a tactical change.”
India made two changes to their playing XI for the encounter. Suryavanshi replaced the injured Kishan, while Prince Yadav came into the side in place of Mayank as a tactical adjustment. The changes gave Suryavanshi an opportunity to bat at number three in a match that marked a significant milestone in his career.
New Zealand's playing XI featured Finn Allen, Tim Seifert as wicketkeeper, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Bevon Jacobs, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner as captain, Nathan Smith, Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy and Lockie Ferguson.
India's playing XI comprised Sanju Samson as wicketkeeper, Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Shreyas Iyer as captain, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav.
Suryavanshi's selection and record-breaking appearance became a key talking point ahead of the contest, as the 15-year-old made his entry into international cricket in New Zealand at an age younger than any male player previously recorded in the country.
