India vs West Indies 5th T20I: Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Kuldeep Yadav in Focus
India vs West Indies 5th T20I in Bengaluru on October 17 will decide the series at 2-2. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Kuldeep Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are in focus as India weighs its selection options amid Arshdeep Singh's injury.
Ahead of the series decider, the Indian team could make some significant changes to its playing XI. Young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi and experienced spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who have been waiting for an opportunity over the past four matches, are among the players attracting attention. There is also speculation about the possible return of fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Awaits His Opportunity
Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who is just 15 years old, has not featured in the playing XI in any of the first four matches of the series. The Indian team has yet to give him an opportunity, prompting disappointment among fans. Although openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have delivered good batting performances in different matches, demands for Vaibhav to be included in the team continue.
With the final match set to decide the series, attention is focused on whether the team management will give the young batter a chance in the decisive encounter.
Could Arshdeep Singh's Injury Open the Door for Bhuvneshwar Kumar?
India have another concern ahead of the fifth T20I, with fast bowler Arshdeep Singh suffering an injury. During the fourth T20I in Hyderabad, a fast delivery struck Arshdeep on his bowling hand while he was batting. He subsequently had to leave the field because of the injury.
Against this backdrop, calls have emerged on social media for experienced fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar to be included in the playing XI for the final match. He is currently at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, preparing for the New Zealand tour, according to the information available. This has raised questions about whether he could be brought directly into the playing XI for the series decider.
Notably, Bhuvneshwar has returned to India's T20 squad for the New Zealand series after nearly four years. His performances in the 2025 and 2026 editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have also renewed discussions about his experience and bowling. However, his participation in the final match will depend on the decision of the team management.
Kuldeep Yadav's Possible Return
Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav featured in India's playing XI for the first two matches of the series but was dropped for the third and fourth T20Is in Indore and Hyderabad.
Kuldeep took two wickets while conceding 33 runs in the first match. However, he conceded 53 runs in the second match, which India lost. He was subsequently left out of the playing XI.
Meanwhile, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin backed Kuldeep on his YouTube channel. Ashwin noted that West Indies batters could struggle against Kuldeep's googly and leg-spin. He also expressed the view that the presence of a bowler like Kuldeep could make a difference of 15 to 20 runs in a match.
With the series tied at 2-2, Kuldeep's possible return could become an important selection decision for India. The team management must also consider the availability of Arshdeep Singh and the possibility of changes involving Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Bhuvneshwar Kumar before finalising the playing XI for the Bengaluru encounter.
India's Probable Playing XI
Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Nitish Reddy, Naman Dhir, Kuldeep Yadav, Prince Yadav and Arshdeep Singh.
