The incident occurred at 1.22 pm between Mahim and Bandra railway stations aboard a Borivali-bound local train travelling from Churchgate, a Government Railway Police (GRP) official said.
The victim was identified as Kejitan Pal Denis Piris, a resident of Santacruz (East). According to the Bandra GRP official, Piris was allegedly pushed from the moving train by 48-year-old Amjad Safriddin Shaikh following an argument over sitting in the coach dedicated to physically-challenged passengers.
Other passengers in the compartment reportedly caught Shaikh and handed him over to the police after the train reached Bandra station, the official said.
Piris sustained serious injuries in the incident and was rushed to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra, where he died during treatment, he said.
The railway police took Shaikh into custody after registering a case under Section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder, police said.
The incident is probably the third case this year in which a passenger on a Mumbai local train was murdered by a fellow traveller.
In the last week of June, 22-year-old Mayank Lohar was allegedly killed by 30-year-old Roshan Ramesh Suvarna inside a first-class compartment between Andheri and Borivali stations following an argument over keeping the doors open amid rains.
Earlier, on January 24, 33-year-old mathematics professor Alok Kumar Singh was fatally stabbed in the abdomen with a sharp tweezer by a co-passenger during a minor argument on a local train approaching Malad station.
The latest incident adds to a series of fatal confrontations reported aboard Mumbai local trains this year, with the railway police taking legal action against the accused.
