PayPal Cuts Jobs Across India Offices as Global Restructuring Targets Workforce

PayPal has laid off employees across its Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad offices amid a global restructuring. While workers cited around 600 job cuts, the company said approximately 220 India roles were affected on August 31.

PayPal has cut jobs across its India offices as part of a global restructuring, with differing accounts over the scale of the reduction. People familiar with the matter said around 600 employees were laid off, while the company said the August 31 reduction involved approximately 220 roles, or 4 per cent of its India workforce of more than 6,000.

The affected teams included technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance across PayPal offices in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

Several workers said they received little or no advance warning before the layoffs. Some employees joined a Monday call involving staff from PayPal’s India offices, where they were informed that their employment would end. Their access was revoked immediately after the call, followed by an off-boarding email. Others said they received a direct email that morning informing them that they had been fired.

“We didn’t get any prior notice. We got an invite to join a call on Monday morning (August 31), and there were many employees on it from across offices in India. We were informed that we would be let go. Right after the call, our access was immediately revoked,” said one impacted employee.

Those affected said they had been offered job assistance and were promised one month’s salary as severance. However, they said they were yet to receive further communication regarding severance and the full-and-final settlement.

A PayPal spokesperson said the staffing changes were part of a previously announced transformation aimed at simplifying the company’s global operations and positioning it for long-term growth.

“The recent staffing changes are part of our previously announced multi-year transformation to simplify our global operations, strengthen execution, and position the company for long-term growth.”

The spokesperson added, “Decisions like these are never easy. We recognise the impact they have on our employees and are committed to supporting them through this transition.”

Reports indicate that the global layoffs began in the Asia-Pacific region, including India, before meetings were held across the US, Europe, the Middle East and Africa on Monday.

In Ireland, around 164 employees, or about 12 per cent of the workforce there, were laid off on the same day.

The India figures have emerged amid PayPal’s broader restructuring plans. In May 2026, management said it would cut the global workforce by 20 per cent over the next two to three years to deliver at least $1.5 billion in gross run-rate savings. With 23,800 staff at the end of 2025, the target would imply roughly 4,760 roles.

The differing figures for the India layoffs highlight the scale of the workforce reduction, with people familiar with the matter putting the number at around 600, while PayPal has stated that approximately 220 roles were affected on August 31.
