Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister S Rajesh Kumar made the statement at an event on Saturday, saying both Congress ministers would resign if the TVK failed to support Gandhi in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Kumar said Congress would not compromise on its position and maintained that Rahul Gandhi is the only candidate the party would support in the Lok Sabha elections.
The remarks came as the TVK continued to promote Vijay as its preferred candidate for prime minister in the 2029 general elections.
Following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Congress joined hands with the TVK to form the ruling government in Tamil Nadu.
The newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by Vijay, won 108 seats in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. TVK subsequently formed the state government with support from the VCK, IUML, Congress, CPI and CPI(M).
Over the past few weeks, the TVK has pushed the idea of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay as its prime ministerial candidate for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Senior TVK leader KA Sengottaiyan said, “People from north Indian states are also looking forward to our leader Vijay; he is the one who has the power to rule the entire India.”
Sengottaiyan also said, “I have travelled with MGR and Jayalalithaa. After these two leaders, Vijay is the force who will not only rule Tamil Nadu but also the future India, following their path,” as quoted by The Print.
The push for Vijay as a national political contender has drawn a sharp rebuke from Tamil Nadu Congress leaders, who said the TVK was still operating in “fan-mode.”
The competing positions have put the alliance partners at odds over who should lead their national political campaign ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, with Congress insisting on Rahul Gandhi and the TVK continuing to project Vijay.
