Mumbai Weather Update: Light Rain Forecast as Lakes Hold 94.29% Water Stock

Mumbai is likely to see light rain on August 20, while Thane may receive moderate spells. Mumbai’s seven lakes hold 94.29% water stock, with rainfall remaining low across the city and suburbs.

 

Mumbai woke up to partly cloudy conditions on Thursday, August 20, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting light spells of rain across the city and its suburbs.

According to the IMD’s 9 am bulletin on Thursday, Mumbai and Palghar are likely to receive light spells of rain, while Thane is expected to witness light to moderate spells of rain during the day. The weather agency forecast a partly cloudy sky with light rain in Mumbai and its suburbs.

Mumbai is likely to record a maximum temperature of 31.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday, while the minimum temperature is expected to remain around 26.4 degrees Celsius.

Rainfall across Mumbai remained comparatively low during the 24-hour period from 8 pm on August 19 to 8 am on August 20. The Island City recorded an average rainfall of 0.39 mm, while the Eastern Suburbs received 4.09 mm and the Western Suburbs registered 2.29 mm of rainfall during the same period.

Mumbai also recorded relatively low rainfall between 8 am on August 19 and 8 am on August 20, with the Eastern Suburbs recording the highest average rainfall among the three regions during the period.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also issued tide timings for Mumbai. A high tide is expected at 4:27 pm on Thursday, reaching a height of 3.12 metres. Another high tide is expected at 6:02 am on August 21, with a height of 3.09 metres.

The low tide is expected at 10:47 pm on Thursday, reaching 1.64 metres. Another low tide is forecast at 12:33 pm on August 21, with a height of 2.72 metres.

Meanwhile, Mumbai’s seven lakes, which supply drinking water to the city, collectively held 13,64,737 million litres of water, or 94.29 per cent of their total live storage capacity, as of 6 am on Thursday, August 20, according to the Hydraulic Engineer’s Department at the Bhandup Master Control Centre.

The current water stock is lower than during the same period last year, when the reservoirs contained 13,76,703 million litres, accounting for 95.12 per cent of their total live storage capacity.

However, the lake levels remained higher than in 2024, when the lakes held 13,53,602 million litres of water, representing 93.52 per cent of their total live storage capacity.

With light rain forecast across Mumbai and its suburbs, the city’s rainfall remained relatively low while its seven key drinking-water reservoirs continued to hold 94.29 per cent of their total live storage capacity on August 20.
