Sony India Launches OCELLUS Camera Tracking System for Advanced AR Production
Sony India has launched OCELLUS ASR-CT1, an advanced marker-free camera tracking system for AR and virtual production, combining Visual SLAM, multiple sensors and real-time camera and lens metadata transmission.
The camera-agnostic OCELLUS system delivers marker-free camera tracking through multiple sensors and sends camera position and orientation data while the camera is shooting. The system is designed for virtual production applications, including In-Camera VFX and AR.
OCELLUS comprises a sensor unit, a processing box and three lens encoders. It can be used with Sony Cinema Line cameras, system cameras and non-Sony cameras. The system features five image sensors and Sony’s Visual SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) technology, which creates a reference map to enable stable marker-free tracking indoors and outdoors.
When used with Sony cameras, metadata including focus, iris and zoom values can be extracted through the camera’s SDI output and transmitted in real time to external devices through an Ethernet connection. Where a lens does not support in-camera metadata capture, lens encoders can be attached to collect the required information.
The captured data can be used for virtual production and augmented reality applications. OCELLUS also supports recording tracking data, camera and lens metadata, timecode and file names, helping streamline post-production workflows.

The OCELLUS sensor unit is compact and lightweight, measuring approximately 86 × 60 × 43 mm and weighing around 250 g. By leveraging four of its five image sensors, the system provides stable, marker-free tracking with strong resistance to occlusion, which is essential for dynamic shooting conditions.
Even in limited-visibility scenarios, tracking data can still be captured as long as at least one active sensor detects valid feature points. IR LEDs positioned on both sides of each sensor improve tracking accuracy in low-light environments. A Visible Light Cut Unit helps maintain tracking consistency under changing lighting conditions.
The sensor unit also includes NATO rail mounting parts for easy installation and flexible positioning. A single USB Type-C® cable connects the sensor unit to the processing box, carrying both power and data through a secure locking mechanism.
The processing box provides real-time transmission of tracking data and camera and lens metadata to CG rendering software such as Unreal Engine through an Ethernet connection, using the free-d format for seamless integration.
It includes multiple connectivity options, including Genlock input, Timecode input, SDI input/output terminals and dedicated ports for lens encoder connections. The processing box can record tracking data along with camera and lens metadata as FBX files on SDXC memory cards supporting UHS-II/UHS-I, synchronized with the main camera’s video files for streamlined post-production.
An OLED display allows users to monitor the IP address, tracking status, lens data and other key information.
The lens encoder detects rotation and helps position lens parameters including focus, zoom and iris, enabling precise data capture during shooting. It sends data directly to the processing box through a LEMO 7-pin cable.
The lens encoder also enables metadata acquisition for lenses and cameras that do not support lens data embedding through SDI output, extending compatibility across different production setups. It comes with five different types of gears, allowing adaptation to a wide range of lenses.
The OCELLUS ASR-CT1 is now available in India for purchase across all Sony Center, Alpha Flagship stores and major electronic stores in India. The model carries an MRP of Rs 32,37,990 and became available from 05th May 2026.
