The strong quarterly expansion has also intensified debate over India's economic self-reliance. Prime Minister Modi urged citizens to reduce overseas travel, foreign weddings and excessive purchases of gold to conserve foreign exchange and strengthen self-reliance by 2047.
The GDP figures, however, faced sharp criticism from Congress leader Ragini Nayak, who rejected the reported growth figure harshly.
Former Finance Secretary Subhash Garg also challenged the headline growth rate, claiming that India's true growth was closer to 2.6% because of base revisions.
Government officials dismissed Garg's calculation as invalid, arguing that it mixes different data series.
The contrasting assessments have placed the latest GDP figures at the centre of a broader debate over how India's economic growth should be measured and interpreted, while the official data continues to show 7.8% real GDP growth for the April-June quarter.
