India's Q1 GDP Surges 7.8%, Fueling Fresh Debate Over Self-Reliance by 2047

India's real GDP grew 7.8% in Q1 to ₹81.36 lakh crore, beating forecasts despite global challenges. The figure has triggered a fresh debate over self-reliance, data revisions and the true pace of growth.

India's real GDP reached ₹81.36 lakh crore in the April-June quarter, registering 7.8% growth from a year earlier, according to official data released on August 31. The growth exceeded forecasts despite global challenges.

The strong quarterly expansion has also intensified debate over India's economic self-reliance. Prime Minister Modi urged citizens to reduce overseas travel, foreign weddings and excessive purchases of gold to conserve foreign exchange and strengthen self-reliance by 2047.

The GDP figures, however, faced sharp criticism from Congress leader Ragini Nayak, who rejected the reported growth figure harshly.

Former Finance Secretary Subhash Garg also challenged the headline growth rate, claiming that India's true growth was closer to 2.6% because of base revisions.

The contrasting assessments have placed the latest GDP figures at the centre of a broader debate over how India's economic growth should be measured and interpreted, while the official data continues to show 7.8% real GDP growth for the April-June quarter.
