Enforcement Directorate Moves to Intervene in Case Over Alleged Attack on Officials After Searches at Kerala Ex-Chief Minister’s Residence

The Enforcement Directorate seeks to intervene in a case related to alleged attacks on its officials following searches at the residence of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The agency demands a wider probe into the incident linked to the CMRL-Exalogic investigation, amid ongoing Kerala High Court proceedings and jurisdictional disputes over the money laundering probe.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has sought a formal investigation into the alleged attack on its officials following search operations conducted at the residence of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The central agency, which probes financial crimes, has decided to implead itself in the ongoing legal proceedings connected to the incident.

According to ED sources cited by NDTV, the agency intends to become a party in the case related to the alleged assault on its personnel during recent searches linked to the CMRL-Exalogic investigation. Officials within the agency have expressed concern over whether the matter will be pursued with adequate seriousness, citing apprehensions regarding the appointment of certain prosecutors during the previous Left government in Kerala.

The Enforcement Directorate is of the view that its intervention is necessary to ensure that the case reaches its logical conclusion and that appropriate legal action is taken against those accused of attacking ED personnel. The agency has also sought a broader investigation into the violence that followed the searches, including scrutiny of the role of political activists in the unfolding events.

The ED has further requested that the involvement of Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders in the incident be examined. It has pointed to visits made by party leaders to the residences of individuals accused in the attack, along with other surrounding developments, as grounds for deeper inquiry. The agency has submitted a detailed report on these concerns to its Directorate.

Meanwhile, the ED has chosen to await the final judgment of the Kerala High Court in connection with a petition filed by CMRL seeking to halt the money laundering investigation linked to the CMRL-Exalogic transactions. The company has argued that the Enforcement Directorate lacks jurisdiction to continue the probe and has stated that the Serious Fraud Investigation Office report alone is insufficient for registering an Enforcement Case Information Report. CMRL has also noted that the SFIO has already filed a complaint in the matter, while the ED maintains that further investigation remains necessary.

The Kerala High Court has directed the Enforcement Directorate not to proceed with any further action in the case until Friday, when it is expected to deliver its verdict on the petition filed by CMRL. However, the interim protection granted by the court does not extend to individuals who are not parties to the appeal, including Veena T, daughter of Pinarayi Vijayan.

Earlier, a Division Bench of the High Court had rejected CMRL’s plea seeking a stay on a Single Bench order and demanding a fresh hearing in the matter.

The developments mark a significant escalation in the legal and investigative battle surrounding the CMRL-Exalogic case, the alleged attack on central agency officials, and the broader scrutiny of political and administrative actions linked to the controversy.
