Indian Embassy in Laos Rescues 47 Indian Nationals from Cyber Scam Centres in Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone
The Indian Embassy in Laos rescued 47 Indian nationals trapped in cyber scam centres in the Golden Triangle SEZ of Bokeo Province. Following a coordinated crackdown by Laotian authorities, 29 were handed over while 18 sought help directly. Ambassador Prashant Agrawal met the group in Vientiane. Repatriation is underway with 30 already returned or in transit, and 17 awaiting travel clearance, reflecting strong diplomatic intervention and citizen protection efforts.
According to the Embassy, 29 of the rescued individuals were formally handed over by Laotian authorities following enforcement action against unlawful operations in the Special Economic Zone. The remaining 18 individuals managed to reach out directly to the Indian Embassy seeking urgent assistance after being caught in exploitative conditions linked to cyber fraud networks.
Indian Ambassador to Laos, Prashant Agrawal, met the rescued nationals upon their arrival in Vientiane. During the interaction, he assessed the challenges they endured and discussed the necessary steps for their safe repatriation and support. The Embassy further confirmed that all required procedural formalities have been completed in coordination with Laotian authorities to facilitate their return to India.
Out of the 47 rescued nationals, 30 individuals have already either returned to India or are currently in transit back home. The remaining 17 individuals are awaiting final travel arrangements as coordination between relevant authorities continues to ensure their safe and orderly repatriation.
The development underscores ongoing concerns regarding cross-border cyber fraud operations and highlights continued diplomatic and administrative cooperation between India and Laos in safeguarding Indian citizens abroad.
