UN Chief Antonio Guterres Praises India’s Role as Tensions Escalate Along Israel-Lebanon Border
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised India and other troop-contributing nations for their continued support to the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon amid rising Israel-Hezbollah tensions. Nearly 900 Indian troops remain deployed under UNIFIL along the Blue Line despite escalating security threats in the conflict-hit region.
Addressing the Security Council, Mr. Guterres said the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and its peacekeepers continue to remain stationed in the conflict-hit region despite growing threats and Israel’s request for relocation. He stated that the UN flag continues to fly across the operational zone, underscoring the organisation’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the area.
The UN Secretary-General reiterated his deep appreciation for both military and civilian members of the UN peacekeeping force and acknowledged the contribution of troop-contributing nations operating under dangerous and volatile conditions. He emphasized the risks faced by peacekeepers as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensifies along the border region.
India remains one of the major contributors to the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, with nearly 900 Indian troops currently deployed under UNIFIL. The force is positioned along the Blue Line, the demarcation separating Israel and Lebanon, where tensions have sharply escalated in recent weeks.
The statement by Antonio Guterres highlights the growing international concern over the deteriorating security situation in West Asia and underscores the critical role played by UN peacekeepers, including Indian troops, in maintaining stability in one of the world’s most sensitive conflict zones.
