Metro Line 5 Expansion Extends Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s Eastern Corridor Connectivity to 34.21 Kilometres
Metro Line 5 expansion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region extends the corridor to 34.21 kilometres after approval of a new extension. The project, costing approximately 181.3 billion rupees, aims to transform connectivity across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Dombivli, with Phase 1 expected to open by the end of 2026 following safety inspection clearance.
The expansion follows the approval of Metro Line 5A, a new extension measuring 11.83 kilometres, which has been added to the original 22.38 kilometre alignment. With this development, the total project cost has reached approximately 181.3 billion rupees, reflecting the scale and ambition of the infrastructure initiative.
Phase 1 of the project, which runs from Thane to Dhamankar Naka, is currently the most advanced segment and is nearing completion. The authority is now preparing for the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety inspection, a mandatory regulatory process required before passenger operations can begin. According to official projections, Phase 1 is expected to be opened to the public by the end of 2026.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described Metro Line 5 as a critical intervention for improving mobility in the Bhiwandi and Kalyan-Dombivli corridor, highlighting the region’s population of over 3.5 million residents who depend on efficient transport systems. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also serves as Chairman of the MMRDA, referred to the project as a powerful mobility link designed to serve workers, traders, and daily commuters across the eastern corridor.
MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee stated that the project aligns with the authority’s broader “Mumbai in Minutes” initiative, aimed at significantly reducing travel times across the metropolitan region through enhanced rapid transit infrastructure.
For decades, the eastern belt of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, particularly Bhiwandi’s large warehousing and logistics hub and the densely populated Kalyan-Dombivli area, has experienced rapid urban growth without proportional expansion in transport infrastructure. As a result, commuters have depended heavily on congested highways and an overburdened suburban railway network.
With its expanded 34.21 kilometre stretch and large-scale investment, Metro Line 5 is positioned as a major mobility upgrade that is expected to reshape daily commuting patterns and provide long-awaited relief to one of the region’s most densely travelled corridors.
