Gir Lion Cub Deaths Trigger High Alert Across Gujarat Forest Divisions

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Bhavani Pati arrived from Gandhinagar and spent the last two days conducting extensive ground inspections at multiple animal care and monitoring facilities, including the Jasadhar Animal Care Centre in Gir East. During the inspection, the senior wildlife official formally confirmed that two more lion cubs had died due to illness while undergoing treatment at the Jasadhar facility.

The crisis has drawn close attention from the highest levels of government, with both the Prime Minister’s Office and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel continuously monitoring the ecological situation. While unconfirmed field-level reports suggested that the total number of wild cat deaths may have crossed eight during the past week, Gujarat Forest Minister Arjun Modhwadia stated that the situation remains under complete administrative control.

According to Modhwadia, the deaths of eight lion cubs recorded in recent days are strongly suspected to be linked to a severe Babesia infection, a dangerous tick-borne parasitic disease associated with parasite infestation in the forest region. The disease is known to weaken animals rapidly, particularly vulnerable cubs exposed to extreme summer conditions.

In response to the growing threat, forest authorities have isolated all free-ranging lions found within a 10-kilometre radius of the affected Gir Gadhada and Babaria forest ranges. Veterinary specialists and research experts from Junagadh Veterinary College have been deployed across the affected zone to carry out emergency preventive health operations and monitor the movement and condition of the lion population.

A large-scale decontamination and tick eradication drive is currently underway throughout the sanctuary landscape to eliminate the parasitic threat and prevent further transmission among lion prides. Officials confirmed that biological samples collected from the deceased cubs have been sent to a specialised state laboratory in Gandhinagar for detailed pathogen analysis and confirmation of the exact cause behind the deaths.

While final laboratory reports are still awaited, field veterinary teams are continuing targeted symptomatic treatment for quarantined lions to prevent deterioration in their health during the intense summer heatwave. Senior forest officials stated that no new lion deaths have been reported during the past 48 hours, indicating that the aggressive containment and monitoring measures implemented on the ground are beginning to show positive results.

The deaths of the lion cubs have once again highlighted the fragile balance within the Gir forest ecosystem, the only natural habitat of the Asiatic lion population in the world. The ongoing emergency response by wildlife authorities now remains crucial to preventing a larger ecological crisis and safeguarding one of India’s most significant wildlife conservation landscapes.
