Deputy Commissioner of Police (Mira Road), Rahul Chavan, stated that approximately 550 police personnel have been deployed across Mumbai, with continuous patrolling underway in sensitive zones to prevent any untoward incident. He further confirmed that law enforcement agencies were closely monitoring online platforms to ensure communal harmony during the celebrations.
Police officials reiterated that the deployment was strategically planned to maintain peace and ensure that the festival concluded without disruption across the region.
Amid the celebrations, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya alleged that illegal animal sacrifice activities were being carried out at multiple locations in Mumbai, including Mankhurd, Deonar, and Govandi. He urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Mumbai Police to take immediate action against such activities.
In a post on the social media platform X, Somaiya claimed that animal sacrifice was taking place in residential housing societies and apartment complexes despite the availability of designated slaughter facilities and licensed markets in nearby areas. He called for strict enforcement action by civic and police authorities.
Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation revoked an earlier granted permission for animal sacrifice at the premises of Azad Nagar D-3 building, Satellite Garden Phase-2, located on Aarey Bhaskar Road in Goregaon (East), further tightening regulatory oversight during the festival period.
Eid al-Adha, observed on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, marks the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. The festival, which follows the lunar calendar, shifts approximately 11 days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar due to its shorter cycle.
Widely regarded as a time of reflection, compassion, and communal harmony, Eid al-Adha commemorates the devotion of Prophet Abraham, symbolizing faith, obedience, and sacrifice. The festival also emphasizes charity, forgiveness, and the strengthening of social bonds within communities.
