BJP Leader Kirit Somaiya Alleges Illegal Animal Slaughter During Eid al-Adha in Mumbai Localities; Urges Swift Action by Civic and Police Authoritiesb

BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has alleged illegal animal slaughter in Mumbai during Eid al-Adha across multiple localities including Mankhurd, Deonar, and Govandi. He urged BMC and police action. Meanwhile, police intervened in Goregaon after community tensions led to cancellation of goat sacrifice in a housing society.

BJP leader Kirit Somaiya on Thursday alleged that illegal animal slaughter activities were being carried out at multiple locations in Mumbai, including Mankhurd, Deonar, and Govandi, during the observance of Eid al-Adha. He has called upon the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the police to take immediate action against the reported violations.

In a post on social media platform X, Somaiya claimed that animal sacrifice rituals were taking place within housing societies and residential complexes despite the availability of designated slaughter markets and authorised facilities in nearby areas. He further alleged that such activities were continuing in violation of established regulations.

Somaiya stated that “dozens of locations” were involved in illegal slaughter activities, specifically naming Mankhurd, Deonar, and Govandi, where he alleged that animal sacrifice was being conducted within housing societies and residential complexes instead of approved sites.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police confirmed on Wednesday that the goat sacrifice ritual at a housing society in Goregaon was cancelled following a confrontation between two communities over the practice. Authorities stated that livestock present at the premises would be removed the following morning to maintain law and order in the area.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, was observed on May 28 this year. The festival falls on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and marks the conclusion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. Its date varies each year due to the lunar calendar, which is shorter than the Gregorian calendar, causing the festival to advance by approximately eleven days annually.

The occasion is widely observed as a period of devotion, charity, and reflection. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Abraham to offer sacrifice in obedience to divine command and is regarded as a symbol of faith, obedience, and spiritual commitment.

Conclusion

The allegations raised by the political leader and the subsequent police intervention in Goregaon highlight rising tensions surrounding the observance of religious practices in urban residential spaces, bringing renewed attention to regulatory compliance, civic oversight, and communal sensitivities during major religious festivals in Mumbai.
