VinFast Patents Second-Generation VF 8 Electric SUV Design in India, Hints at Premium EV Expansion

VinFast has patented the design of its second-generation VF 8 electric SUV in India, hinting at a possible market launch. The updated flagship EV features a redesigned exterior, upgraded cabin technology, revised dimensions, a 500 km driving range, and enhanced front-wheel-drive performance as the company expands its premium electric vehicle strategy.

Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has officially patented the design of its second-generation VF 8 electric SUV in India, indicating the company’s growing focus on strengthening its presence in the country’s rapidly expanding electric mobility market. The development comes shortly after the global unveiling of the updated VF 8 and has intensified speculation about the model’s potential launch in the Indian market.

If introduced in India, the VF 8 will become VinFast’s flagship SUV, positioned above the VF 7 in the company’s product lineup. The latest VF 8 also represents a major milestone for the automaker, as it becomes the brand’s first second-generation vehicle while the rest of the portfolio continues to rely on first-generation designs.

The updated VF 8 showcases VinFast’s evolving design philosophy with substantial changes to both the exterior and interior. The electric SUV now carries a sharper and sportier visual identity highlighted by a redesigned front fascia. A full-width wing-shaped LED daytime running light setup dominates the front section, with the VinFast logo placed prominently at the centre. The SUV also features a large gloss-black grille that further enhances its aggressive styling.

At the rear, the SUV receives a connected design element in the form of a large black applique linking the LED taillights. A prominent V-shaped insignia has also been integrated into the rear profile. Additional styling elements include 19-inch aerodynamic wheels, semi-flush door handles, and chrome detailing running along the window line.

Dimensionally, the second-generation VF 8 measures 4,701 mm in length, 1,872 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height. The SUV rides on a 2,840 mm wheelbase and offers a ground clearance of 170 mm. Compared to the outgoing model, the new VF 8 is 49 mm shorter and 62 mm narrower, while its wheelbase has been reduced by 110 mm. However, the height has increased by 3 mm and ground clearance has grown by 8 mm.

Inside the cabin, VinFast has carried out a comprehensive redesign focused on modernisation and functionality. The SUV now features a centrally positioned 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, although the number of speakers has been reduced from the previous model. The vehicle also introduces a new TFT driver’s instrument cluster and a redesigned steering wheel. The gear selector continues to remain mounted on the steering column.

Feature highlights include Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, dual-zone climate control, a driver’s seat memory function, and a 360-degree camera system aimed at improving convenience and safety.

Under the hood, the second-generation VF 8 is powered by a smaller 60.13 kWh battery pack that delivers a claimed driving range of 500 km. This marks a significant reduction compared to the earlier model’s 87.7 kWh battery and 562 km range. VinFast has also discontinued the all-wheel-drive configuration for the updated model. However, the front-wheel-drive powertrain now produces 228 bhp and 330 Nm of torque, reflecting an increase of 18 bhp and 20 Nm over the previous version.

The patent filing of the updated VF 8 in India signals VinFast’s intent to strengthen its foothold in the country’s competitive electric vehicle segment. With refreshed styling, revised dimensions, upgraded technology, and a new powertrain setup, the second-generation VF 8 highlights the company’s broader strategy to position itself as a serious player in the premium electric SUV market.
